I received a text message the other day, reproduced in full here, from someone purporting to be "TXT FLIRT" :. .. .You've a secret admirer, call to find out who 0906 406 2497 16+ CC UK Ltd Po Box 4217 London W1A6ZF 150p/min Av cl 3min. .. .Now, I'm not dumb enough to phone this thing back, but wondered if anyone has more info on whether I can stop this stuff or find out if it's genuine ( highly unlikely ! ). Anyone ?

You want it when?

Hi NR got one of these as well, no way to tell if its genuine as when you call you are asked to give 5 mobiles numbers - they send the same message you got to the non matching numbers and a confirmation one to the one that matches the orginal sender to you. All at between 40 to 90p a minute. If you don't get a match then it's all wasted.. .. .Incredible waste of time and money - much better just to send the message directly!

NR - are you asking us to comment on the likelihood of you having a secret admirer? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> . .. .In my (limited) experience with SMS marketing, I believe that the same ligislation has been afforded that applies to unsolicited/SPAM email and is governed by the WMA (Wireless Marketing Assoc) but not by the DMA (Direct Marketing Assoc) which presides over mobile operators and their marketing.. .. .All of this means that, in theory, you should not be SPAM-ed - or at leat you should be able to opt out after one message - but in practice I uspect the assoc.s above lack the teeth to do anything serious about the problem.. .. .What is more concerning is an operators ability to accept a reply as acceptance of charges for response SMS messages even if this is not made explicit in the original message. Sharks.. .. .What is most concerning is a rogue operator expecting someone to respond to a 'flirtacious' message that includes a premium rate number, a company name and a charge rate!. .. .Stick to the wife, NR <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> . .. .Hersh

I received 2 unwanted texts today, similar to the above. As I understand it the problem is that these texts are reverse - charged to your bill! whether you reply to them or not.. .. .I have had the same mobile number for 4 years. Never had any unwanted calls until today. Last night my BT line appearred to have no dial tone; I reported the fault, giving mobile number to automated servivce. Cue several rather unnecessary text messages telling me of repair progress. Also cue mobile call from decidedly strange BT engineer asking me to check the line was now ok. Half an hour later, 4 unwanted texts.. .. .http://www.tps-online.org.uk/tpsr/html/default.asp. .. .This site is where you can register your desire to recieve no more of this crap. Whether the a*sholes that run this scam pay any attention is unlikely.. . . . <small>[ 20 March 2002, 19:04: Message edited by: chickenhawk66 ]</small>
