"Google SketchUp (free) is an easy-to-learn 3D modeling program whose few simple tools enable you to create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects – even space ships. You can add details, textures and glass to your models, design with dimensional accuracy, and place your finished models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies. Google SketchUp (free) is a great way to discover if 3D modeling is right for you."

Tks for the effort @hris.
How long did it take you to put that list together? Was the TV broken:}? Quiet a few in there that I can use.

Pretty impressive list there @hris, good job.

I'm a little bit raw - is there any thing in there that would help me to write a pretty basic spreadsheet (log book) type program for the Symbian OS?

Cheers.

©hris,

Good list. You might also want to check out this earlier thread (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71165) which has a few choice gems on it (some will, of course, be a little dated, but most, I would think, would not.)

Here to help!!

As for the log book.....

I am working on making a logbook in MS Access. Using a 'switchboard' to make it sort of interactive.
I will post it up when I get it completed.

I'm not reallly sure of something 'free' that could help you. Sorry.

Cheers

Edit:
PS. Everything can be free if you know the right places to look!!! (Except Airline5, that you have to buy!)

I'll second phnuff's suggestion. Could this be made sticky? There are many tools here which could solve several problems people have had. Not to mention pointing people at perfectly good free software that could save them a bundle. Maybe it could be reorganised a little first though, as there are some duplicates in it (I am willing to help with this).

Thanks for putting that together ©hris!

Top list! Great work. Thanks Chris!

I third phnuff - this really deserves to be made sticky.

Just add a free OS, Wine and WineX and you have the world at your feet...

PS: You missed out MEPIS (and over 300 others) in your Linux distro list - I'll report on it in a week or so.

Two more free programs.

Winsock Fix: 'specially good for Win2K after an NIC change knackers your connectivity: WinsockFix (http://members.shaw.ca/installations/WinsockFix.zip) Also works with Windows XP although it's not needed as often as with the other versions of Windows.

And a recent (for me) find that enables you to do a remote shutdown of Windows 2000 that goes all the way, not stopping at the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen:

Power Off (http://www.stefan-kuhr.de/poweroff/main.php3)

It really should be a sticky and up there with the travelling thread.

One I find very useful is the Knoppix Security Tools Distribution (http://www.knoppix-std.org/). Download and burn the .iso and you get a bootable CD full of useful tools for testing your network security. You may be surprised what services you are offering to the outside world.

...use it responsibly though folks :ok:

Microsoft Visual C++ Toolkit

http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/

FAQ:
What is the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003?
The Visual C++ Toolkit is a free edition of Microsoft’s professional Visual C++ optimizing compiler and standard libraries – the same optimizing compiler and standard libraries that ship in Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional!

Are there any restrictions on how I use the Visual C++ Toolkit?
In general, no. You may use the Toolkit to build C++ -based applications, and you may redistribute those applications. Please read the End User License Agreement (EULA), included with the Toolkit, for complete details.

Is there any technical support available for the Visual C++ Toolkit?
No. The Visual C++ Toolkit is a free download and is provided without formal technical support. Documentation for the Visual C++ compiler is available online, and it is recommended that further assistance be obtained by posing questions in online programming newsgroups and community forums.

What does the Visual C++ Toolkit install on my machine?
The Toolkit installs 1) the Visual C++ command-line compiler and linker, and their dependencies. 2) the Visual C++ C Runtime Library and static-link modules, and the Standard C++ Library, including STL 3) the Microsoft .NET Framework Runtime, including library files necessary for building C++ applications that run on the .NET Common Language Runtime, 4) four samples demonstrating key features of the Visual C++ compiler and libraries.

Just had to throw my two pennorth' in.

Been using Norton Internet Security / NAV for a year or two now and, to cut a long story short, needed to look for a replacement.

Installed Zone Alarm, used it many moons ago but it now seems a lot more seamless, you just dont notice its there.

On the virus scanner front, I've used AVG before, but was not totally convinced. Co-inciding with the start of this thread, I read a review of AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/) . A respected PC journalist recommended it so I thought I would give it a try. Most impressed. Lightweight (very), it's updated very regularly and I've tested it on a number of recent viruses (deliberately downloading - am I mad?) and it caught them all instantly and without fuss. The only negative aspect in my opinion is that you have to remember to update it manually, and every update is a full replacement of the virus definition file, a shade short of 2mb, no probs with ADSL, but slightly irritating for dial up connections.

Would'nt dream of buying an AV product again whilst this is around.

A new version of Adaware is available. The current version will be phased out in about 90 days.
I have just downloaded it on XP and seems to be working fine.

Hi Sprocket,

Did you just download over the version already on your PC ?

Looking at the new 'face' of the SE, it looks a bit fancy - I like the no nonsense look of the old version.

Do you find much difference in the operation?

G'day TG, first up I downloaded and then installed.
The Install Wizard will give you the option to remove existing Adaware 6 before it installs SE. I used it to remove AAW6 and the install went well.
The Lavasoft web site forum has some FAQs if you want to learn more about SE.

EDIT: I believe there may be some conflict with the two versions if SE is installed over the top of AAW6.
Dont forget to check for updates after installing, there have been a couple since the initial release of SE

Thanks a lot for the info. I shall take your good advice, and indeed always check for 'fixes'/updates.

I've found the new version of Adaware to be far more thorough in both its detection of problems and in the way that it reports them.

It's also much faster.

Certainly gives more control over what you delete, whilst providing additional and more detailed information.

Overall a great improvement on an already great tool.

I must confess, I have not changed over to the new SE yet!

Hi Guys,

I've just installed the latest FREE SE version, and was surprised to find it said I had 107 infiltrations! I binned them all.

I tried updating the 'signatures' after it said my list was 6 days old???!!! On instructing it to update, it said no new components to install....... strange.

The present definitions [right after installing upgrade] are:
SE1R7 06.09.2004 [with the core application 1.04 Personal]

I just find strange/odd that such a smashing FREEWARE is telling me my definitions are 6 days out of date, then does not apparently allow the update.

Another niggle is this little note from the HELP files:

Startup settings are disabled in Ad-Aware SE Personal edition

I happened to like the auto have a look facility in the old version when the PC fired up every time!

Still it's free, so acceptable.

Cheers

This thread is so useful to me, especially when I'm choosing new software for the home PC's.

Sadly some of the programs are hard to find - Sygate has been "taken over" so their excellent firewall is hard to find now, DVDdecrypter has been nobbled by legal threats, etc.

Perhaps we should try and update Chris's excellent list, to keep it as useful???

I had a trojan appear on the kids XP machine, (Backdoor.Genlot.DX) and went looking for info on it. Stumbled across this on the McAfee site and it appears to be a great free tool for helping kids surf safely.

I've probably got the most protected PC in the world. Or in our street, at least. All free.
Been using Ewido (trial program-antispyware) for it's resident shield and general very high standard. (Read several bad things from users of Windows Defender, which replaced the very good Giant application, which has just expired:{ , so decided not to "upgrade")
So searched for a new application, not hopeful at first, came across this little gem: http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Interesting reviews + download also here: http://www.download.com/Spyware-Terminator/3000-8022_4-10561899.html?tag=lst-0-1
Don't know for how long this will stay free. It's BRILLIANT. But free it is!:8
(Running it plus Ewido[till it dies],Spybot's Teatimer, Winpatrol,SpywareBlaster+Guard and Avast antivirus. No conflictions/slowdown.) There is also an option to include an antivirus scanner.(Free) But it seems a bit less oomphy than Avast's, from user accounts.

Well, not backup in the traditional Windows/DOS sense - more of a scheduled file copy with a good interface and tons of options. It's free, works nicely and seems written by someone who cares about software quality.

"Author: Cobian
Description: Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (download and upload).

Cobian Backup exists in two different versions: application and service. The program uses very few resources and can be running on the background on your system, checking your backup schedule and executing your backups when necessary. Cobian Backup is not an usual backup application: it only copies your files and folders in original or compressed mode to other destination, creating a security copy as a result. So Cobian Backup can be better described as a "Scheduler for security copies".

Cobian Backup supports several methods of compression and strong encryption."

I use various different strategies for backup - one of them is setting up a cronjob to copy my active working files from my PC to Tom's PC and vice versa. I use Techsoft's incomparable MirrorFolder for this, but it does cost $39. Cobian Backup would be an excellent free alternative. I think it's first class!

UTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) - Torrent client, faster than Azureus and if you enable the protocol encryption option it will stop your ISP from throttling torrent traffic which appears to be happening with all ISPs these days.

If you have an old box (486 will do job) and 2 network cards lying around then i would recommend downloading smoothwall it is a free firewall program including the linux based operating system from www.smoothwall.org (http://www.smoothwall.org) it is only about 45mb. It acts as the first line of defence between the internet and your local network. i have been using it for over 2 years now without any problems. there is also a great support forum if you get into strife. Much better than installing seperate firewall software on all your computers on your lan. passed all tests on shields up & symantec. I would highly recommend it and best of all it is FREE.

I've been using Brother's Keeper (http://www.bkwin.net) for several years and it is constantly being developed by its author. The BK Support forum (http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.software.bk) is very good and quite active.

If there's a feature that isn't already part of the application and you think it's a good idea to have it, the author will consider it and, if appropriate, will develop the solution and it will appear in a later version.

It is shareware, but once you pay a relatively small fee, extra features are opened. Having said that, if you just want to try it out, and not register it, it is probably the best featured (and NOT time limited) application of its type out there.

This is another one that is being constantly developed, and the author responds pro-actively to any request for additional features or improvements.

I've found SiteAdvisor pretty good, in a "master caution light" sort of way, but just because a site is red or amber flagged doesn't necessarily mean the download of a particular program is fraught.
Here are the SiteAdvisor resulkts, for the program concerned (AutoScreenRecorder) http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/wisdom-soft.com/downloads/488007/ Came up clean.

May as well give my secret away.

If you wish to backup your DVD's, Dvdycrypter is now owned by macromedia and has been withdrawn from the public domain. However, if you download 'ripitforme' and the the other programs that are needed (it tells you where and what to get) you can backup all your DVD's. ALL these programs are free, don't be fooled into buying them.

This works everytime.

This is a great thread, and has given me lots of valuable tips. Thanks to all.

In return here is one I just stumbled across: http://media-convert.com/ This site allows you to upload an amazing variety of different file types from different applications, and it converts it to a file type you require. It converts documents, audio, picture and movies (although there is a limit on file size) and spits it back as a either a download file, zip file or just a link.

I know it's not really "Free Software" as such, but could be a bit useful (and still free to use) for any of us wanting to use our free files in paid applications or vice versa. Took about 30 seconds to convert an old Star Office .sxw file to a Microsoft Word .doc so I could e-mail it to someone else. :ok:

Hello,

Like FRAPS but freeware.... :)

http://taksi.sourceforge.net/

What it is:

Taksi is a utility that allows you to take screenshots and record video clips of your favourite games and other 3D-graphics applications. Inspired by Fraps (www.fraps.com) (http://www.fraps.com)/), Taksi aims to provide an open source alternative to that great tool.

Other features:

Taksi can support live video compression with any VFW video codec your system has installed (i.e. XVid, DivX, MS Mpeg4, etc).

Supports user-specified key mapping, allowing user to assign almost any key to a particular function (such as video start/stop, screenshot trigger, etc.). Runtime re-mapping of the keys is supported via GUI: user can change keys without having to restart the game.

Custom video settings are supported (see manual.txt for more details about this).
Basically, this allows a user to specify on a per-game basis the frame rate of the captured video, and the weight of each source frame. The weight determines whether a particular frame is captured or not. This allows for creation of smoother and faster videos, when generic algorithm doesn't produce desired results.

Continuing my new-found love-affair with the Apple Mac, here's a neat little utility that filled a gap for me.

"NuFile(pronounced new-file (Nu is a greek letter)) is a contextual menu plugin. It adds a new file menu when you right click at a folder(ie: desktop or Finder background); just like what you can do in Windows. Don't know if it's been brought up, and I 'm too bl**dy lazy to find out for myself, but ExifPro is a much-better-than-the-original variant of Adobe's CS3 Bridge.
It's free to use, but there's a somewhat annoying splash-screen at start-up, that goes away if you pay for a key. It's dirt cheap anyway, so I bought mine...

When I Google I get lots of media format convertors but none to convert an EXE file. The sort I want to convert are the ones that are fairly small and self-contained, they don't stuff DLLs everywhere.

I just downloaded Launchy version 2 from http://www.launchy.net (http://www.launchy.com)

What is it?

A free windows utility designed to remove the need for start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even file manager.

Simply press Alt+Spacebar to open the Launchy dialogue window and start typing. From program names to web browser searches you have previously performed it will guess what you want to open. 99.9% of the time it's right first time, too, and where it's unsure you will get a list to choose from.

I am told that Vista has something similar but I installed this on XP a few days ago and find it brilliant.

Note that so long as it's in your start menu (so it starts invisibly on XP startup) which it is by default, there is no need to add an icon to your Desktop or Quick Launch tray. This is why both of these options are switched off (unticked) by default when running the installation wizard. Simply let it start in the background (I have found no noticeable performance penalty) and then press Alt-Space when you want to use it.

A great utility.

Can't see any reference to this, so here we go.

For those using IE7, here's a nifty little thing that does various things as well as having a decent ad blocker and spell checker (ok, you have to "teach" it some things, but it's pretty simple to use).

Truecrypt (TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux (http://www.truecrypt.org)) is now way faster on multiple-core machines. On Vista and Win2008, logical partitions as well as physical partitions can now be encrypted. Other assorted bells and whistles remain roughly the same.

I spent hours trying to sort my son's laptop when it started to run EXTREMELY slowly.

Eventually, after a google, I was directed towards RegSupremePro which has a 30 day free trial.

One run of the prog sorted it. Don't know what the underlying problem was but it did the biz.

Yay!!!

Just make sure you make some kind of registry backup before you run it, or, if it has its own backup capability, use it.

Operating system.

Ubuntu Linux.....google and download, you can burn it to cd or write them and they'll post you one.....FREE you can boot off the disc,or partition your hard-drive and choose linux or windoze on bootup.
regular new versions, each is supported for 18 months ,IIRC.

I've used it for about 4 years- NEVER crashes and pleased to say I don't even know how to work windoze, past 3.11.

Ubuntu, Opera, Firefox, Open Office and millions of "plugins" all free

recognises a printer, camera etc. plays almost any format audio and video and isn't plagued with all the viruses and malware that plague Microshaft machines........I love it.

Seagate Disc Wizard

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard

Very useful free tool to clone or backup hard-disks - uses Acronis engine + works with other makes as long as you have at least on Seagate drive plugged into the system. Can backup to external drives and other removable media too. When restoring from backups you can pick and choose individual files or folders.

Used it last weekend to migrate complete C drive from 35gb disk to 80gb in under 60 minutes.
