05 April, 2004, JOHANNESBURG: SA Airlink will from May 3 this year offer a daily SAA-branded scheduled service between Johannesburg’s revamped Lanseria Airport and Cape Town International Airport.
Rodger Foster, CEO of SA Airlink (part of the SAA, SA Express, SA Airlink alliance) says the new service will replace - and substantially improve – the Lanseria-Cape Town schedules.

“A recent Gauteng study showed that 75% of respondents favoured the privately-owned Lanseria as connection point above Johannesburg International Airport. There’s no doubt that commuters from the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg, as well as areas such as Centurion, Midrand, the West Rand and outlying towns such as Brits, Thabazimbi and the Hartbeespoort area - to name just a few examples - would find Lanseria Airport more convenient than a long drive to the East Rand,” Foster stated.

“A R100m expansion programme is currently being implemented at Lanseria. Already completed is a new R40m passenger terminal – which includes state-of-the-art Business Class lounges – which will be open to all SA Airlink passengers once the new service commences.

“The airport’s runways have also been widened and lengthened in a multi-million rand upgrading project, and significant apron extensions have also taken place. A new control tower will also be completed by the end of this year,” he added.

Time-saving would be a major convenience factor at Lanseria, Foster stated. “The airport has much shorter taxi ways than Johannesburg International and commuters will save about 9 minutes of taxiing time, for a start. Parking facilities also are virtually on the doorstep of the terminal building and there will be no need for shuttle buses from check-in point to the aircraft. Car hire facilities, too, are available on site. And, as stated, the comfort of a Business Class lounge will be available to all SA Airlink passengers, irrespective of the fare category they have booked.”

He emphasised that SA Airlink would be offering the new service not as a “discounted, no frills” air connection but as a fully-fledged SAA-branded point-to-point service, with full qualification for the SAA Voyager Frequent Flyer programme.

“SA Airlink might consider Lanseria as departure point for services to other major centres as well in future. The new service is a milestone for Lanseria in that now, for the first time, a member of the SAA-alliance will offer a service from the airport.”

SA Airlink will offer four return flights daily during weekdays, one on a Saturday, and three on Sundays, utilising the airline’s luxury Brazilian Embraer 135 jet aircraft. Flight duration will be 2 hours and the time-table – starting with 6.15am weekday departures from Lanseria (and 6am from Cape Town) has been designed around both business and leisure markets.

Reduced one-way fares to launch the new service will be available from R630 excluding taxes.
