View Full Version : PPRuNe Averages

9th Aug 2001, 17:11
As I was reading Tony Draper's latest eccentricity, the movie sound effects thingy, I noticed his total currently stands at 467 posts, after registering in May 2001. My curiosity was piqued, and it peaked to the point where I got out my calculator.

Allowing the most conservative figures (signed up first day of the month) 467 posts in three months gives an average of 155.66 ppm (posts per month) which in turn gives a final batting average of an astonishing PPD (posts per day) of 5.02. (This figure will no doubt increase as I type this post).

Racking my brains to come up with somebody who could match this prolific average, my thoughts sprang immediately to Tartan Gannet. Surprise! 1136 posts in 11 months, 103.3 ppm or a very respectable, indeed, awesome PPD of 3.33, but completely outclassed by the Bradmanesque figures of Draper.

Feeton Terrafirma? A miserable 601 posts in 10 months at a PPD of a laughable 1.94. HA!!

I am not going to mention a certain fundamentalist bore, because whatever his PPD was it should, like the East German swimming team's records, be erased from the books.

Now I frequent only three forums on a regular basis, JB D & G and the pissu .... er, sorry, Bashes, so there could well be somebody on R&N for example who outshines even TD.

This has not been an exhaustive search by any means, but if anybody would like to nominate somebody with a high PPD, or indeed nominate themselves, since that is the sort of honour that would appeal to such persons, please do so.

A top ten list would be most illuminating... perhaps Draper is only a Sobers to somebody else's Bradman?

*Whaddya mean, get a life.....?*

Makes my average of 96.79 not out look a little miserable... That only puts me in the Graham Gooch category!

Well at least I'm NOT bringing up the rear! Over on Dunnuda there are a couple of sad people who can't find an excuse to post.

Air Ace, Member No 116 has only 490 posts, but not to be out done in his ability to lurk and not post is ANZAC, member no 68 with 137 posts and BSB member no 234 with a turely misserable effort, 84.

I'd like to think that I only post when I have something useful to contribute, but then, everybody dreams.

9th Aug 2001, 18:23
oh dear.

9th Aug 2001, 18:34
Quality v. quantity is the point here.

Can anyone come up with a way to measure humour content in postings? This would, to my mind, be much more meaningful than pure proliferation of posts.

My unscientific, Arrow Mk 4 analysis, would tend to indicate that messrs Tricky followed by Draper would be well up in the running.

Any followers on that????

9th Aug 2001, 18:50
i think i have an average of about 2 posts per day. i really must do better! :( :D

9th Aug 2001, 19:00
Jeez, Arrow, fair go mate, one thing at a time. Nobody looking at the all-time batting averages asks about the quality of the bowling, there's no diagrams on a golf scorecard, and other assorted cliches......
Let's not get distracted at the moment by subjective criteria, let's just get a list of the immortals first before we analyse their performance.

Remember that a journalist interviewing Bradman a couple of years ago asked him to estimate his average against the current crop of bowlers as opposed to the ones he faced. Sir Don ventured modestly "perhaps about 50.."

"50???" said the journalist incredulously.

"Well, I am 91, after all", said Don. :)

Huggy, I apologize for the oversight. In fact according to the Binos book of rules I make your monthly average 101, thereby giving a PPD (which is the crucial figure) of 3.25, an effort to be applauded wildly, yet displays again the precocious talent of Draper. Can he keep it up?

Despite being accused of spending more time on here than setting up airlines, I have just checked out my own average: 2,400 posts in 25 months. That comes to just over 3 posts per day which at 5 minutes per post still leaves me 23 hours 45 to do more boring (but hopefully more profitable) things! :D  :D

9th Aug 2001, 19:03
Yes but Tricky wants to sort out what the smiling fish means.

don't think I'll even come close the prolific draper (and as for quality he has provided some of teh funniest posts I've ever seen, not least his latest effort of movie sound effects.) with a meagre 0.6 ppd (ish)

HOWEVER, my evil twin brother GashHandlin [with no space!!!!] has a statistic which I feel will be very difficult to beat,

registered April 2001 so to date a total of 128 days

number of posts 1, today :D

batting average = 0.0078125

oh well better go, the phones ringing, probably the England selectors :D

Trouble with humour is that it is totally subjective. Some found the "Bonsai Kitten" thread hilarious, others such as myself would have happily applied the electrodes to its originator and would have found THAT amusing! Humour, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I have to admit that whilst I have a sense of the comic, I have virtually no sense of humour.

Perhaps a better index would be who can start and sustain the longest thread, (a certain evangelist being expressedly disqualified). So far Davaar is doing well with his Interuptus thread , if only I had the slightest idea what the hell it is all about??????????, its reminds me of Finnigan's Wake by James Joyce. Otherwise, the greatest number of separate threads which acheive more than one page.

These averages as well as "date of joinning" are only pertinent for our current guises.

Being jailed by Danny, for instance, will greatly affect ones batting average. KapitainM, I believe, is a case in point.

10th Aug 2001, 12:40

Sorry, but I think my Northern Ireland thread beats Interruptus quite considerably.

I have to admit having a little bit of regret about starting a thread which was obviously going to stir up so much hatred, because the whole point of the thread is that hatred is bad. But however rash a move it was to start the thread, it's 84 posts so far make it one of the longest.....

But not quite as long as TW's DIY Limmerick Thread II, with 94 posts! However, it has been nearly 24 hours since the last posting on the Limmerick thread, and I have high hopes for Northern Ireland!

As for my PPD, it would be much higher if we had an exact join date instead of just the month. I think this will be my 76th post, and with a join date of July 2001 that gives me (76/41=)1.85 PPD. But I believe I actually registered on 16th July, and if we use this as my actual start date instead of 1st July, my PPD increases to (76/26=)2.92 PPD. So I have fallen seriously short of Mr Draper. End of term report - Must do better!

Keg, it is certainly possible to combine a job with PPRuNe, so long as it is the kind of job where you can sit at your desk all day doing nothing (like mine!)

PS - Maybe we could convince Danny to include the PPD in the poster's details below each post? I know we can work it out from the info that's already there, but it would make it more "official"!

10th Aug 2001, 13:14
FFF, yep, I bet Danny would just LOVE to take that on!

TG, old bean, as I have pointed out, this has nothing to do with subjective criteria. Rather, it reminds me of the young teacher in Decline and Fall who needed peace in his classroom and got it by offering a prize for the longest essay, irrespective of any possible merit. :D

(I knew there was a reason I had to read that book at school...)

The alarming evidence now, less than 24 hours after my original post, is that Draper's total has gone up by 22! After setting a blinding pace, he has turned on the turbocharger and is now apparently intent on setting up his own index... PPH! What a dispiriting and demoralising display by a true master. I can only look on in wonder.

Reckon I'm on about 2.21 PPD - but this will plumett like a stone - with the gliding co-efficiency of a brick once the IT senior type reviews the access log and locks of PPRuNe :D Unfortunately I'm the senior type so I only have to report myself to myself, but fellow PPRuners I promise not to be to tough, but rules is rules ;)

10th Aug 2001, 14:16

Tony Draper's Sound Effects thread has just drawn level with my Northern Ireland thread on 84 posts, and looks certain to surge past it. The DIY Limericks thread has now dropped off the first page of threads, which I'm sure won't help it's chances, and Sound Effects seems like the odds-on favourite to be the Favourite Thread.

Damn, this guy is good!

[Edited because I just fell for a "dirty tricks" campaign by YWIW to force me to post on Mr Draper's thread, thus bringing the number of posts to 85, one more than Northern Ireland. Ar$e!]

Some of you seem oblivious to the fact that once a thread reaches 100 posts it gets closed anyway because threads with lots of replies aren't digested too well by the server.

One other thing you may want to take into account, especially those of you who seem to delight in raising your post totals by just posting drivel and monosylable replies are VERY likely to have your posting totals surgically altered and may even end up with a negative figure!!! Just ask Reddo, as her post total started from a four figure minus number!

Actual number of posts is not a reference to anyone as the quality of the posts is far more important. I would have thought that the new 'rankings' below your usernames were far more important. Which leads me on to this...

Here in the UK we can purchase personalised number plates for our cars. People pay a premium for these plates and so in an effort to raise even more revenue to pay for the next server to run PPRuNe I have decided to sell personalised titles, in colour to those who wish to be recognised by their choice of prose in their title.

A rising scale of charges will be available from a plain 5 per word with extra features such as bold, italic, colour and even a picture or graphic to be included. These titles would be yours to keep forever and would only be re-chargeable if you forgot your password and didn't have access to the email address you rgistered with. Of course, insurance could be taken out against this cost as well as extra insurance so that you original number of posts could be restored.

One final idea is to offer member numbers from 10-500 for a fee to those who feel socially inadequate with numbers originally assigned.

What do you think?

Let me not seem to be wishing to flagellate an expired equine, but I have once again been moved to my calculator with stunning results.

The original post in this thread raved about Draper's extraordinary average of 5.02 PPD (posts per day). Nobody else appeared to be even close, and I ruminated on the possibility of a complete freak in our midst. But the latest calculations should cause even the most blase among us to gape in awe, to wit:

912 posts in 5 months gives a PPM average of 182.4 (up froim 155.66), which in a short space of time has raised his PPD average to 5.88. Amazing stuff, yes? But wait! There's more!

If we isolate his performance over the last two months, we find a PPM average of 222.5, giving an astonishing run rate of 7.17 PPD!!!!!

All this begs a question, but I am so flabbergasted by these latest figures I don't know what it is. My Gaster has never been so flabbered.

Move over Donald George Bradman. Bow, Ppruners, to the indisputable master.

Edited to include the unfathomable concept that while I was writing this, his total went up by 2!!!!

I had to make this post first, to find out my total, coz it's my first of the night and can't recall the last thread I posted on. But I suspect the calculation will reveal that I, just possibly, have a life outside of here...

Editted coz now I know my current total is 1531 since June 2000. If I say that's over a period of 16 months, the PPM = 95.69, so my PPD is somewhere around 3. Hmmm, maybe I really DO need to get a life outside of this place... :D :D

From the book of Al-Warezam The Mad

And the last Angel broke the final seal,
And the posts poured forth,
One thousand shall be the number of his posts.
And the number of the posts shall one thousand be
Not nine hundred nor thirty three in number
nor shall they be six hundred and sixty six.
But one thousand alone in their counting.
shall the posting be.
Spake he the angel, none shall count the numbers
of his posting nor shall he figure them,
They shall not make tables of the posting,
nor calculate the numbers thereof.
And when the postings are of the thousand,
none more being being forthcoming, for the vessel is broke.
and lies upon the earth shattered .
Shall the Dark one from the Tower decend,
decendeth from the tower shall he.
Mighty will be the wrath of he that decendeth
and verily a blight shall be on the face of the land
and the name of the blighted land shall be Mackay
the cursed land, and the tower therein shall be acursed
and they therein the tower also shall acursed be
,for they the numbers of the posting, have counted they them,
And the clubs shall wither in their hands,
neither will the clubs strike true, all drink as bitter herbs in their
mouths shall be, and their ears shall be striken so the harps no longer please them.
for no more posting shall shall pour forth.
Let he who hath understanding count the of the posting, for the number of the postings is

My dear Mr Draper, 'twas merely an observation; I would have expected nothing less than subtlety from one such as yourself. The name of Tony Draper is already whispered in the hallowed halls, with reverence and awe. So, if the end is nigh, then let it be a blaze of glory such as Prune has never seen, or remain and enthrall us still with tales of derring do.

I am somewhat concerned with the prediction of the Mackay Clubs serving bitter, for how shall those in the far distant land of Oz know how to serve this ancient and venerable brew. Wormwood has a taste more pleasant than iced ale.

Hmmm, Mr Binocular named Golf, Drinking and Music as his main interests, so Draper scanned the ancient books for a relevent curse.
My apologies to the members of the Mackay Club, but even precision guided curses aimed at golf clubs can sometimes go astray, the distances involved prevented me sending one of my imps to designate nine irons and such, so collateral damage can be expected in a curse of this magnitude, I'm sure the locusts will leave shortly. ;)

Incidently Miss V small white hound is much more famous than humble self, and his photo adorns the cockpit of at least one 747 and a number of A10 Warthogs, and one F18E.
Strangley Draper as yet has received no requests from the RAF , but if such a request is forthcoming ,small white hound will concider each on its merits.

In my last post I reported with amazement that TD's average over the previous two months had been 7.17 PPD.

Attempted descriptions of this man's continual rewriting of the record books no longer seem worthwhile, for no words can adequately sum them up. Therefore, as self-appointed chronicler of The Man's feats, I simply report that his whole Pprune career average from Day 1 has now superseded that effort and stands at 7.8 PPD. You may well ask how that could have happened. I'm glad you asked that question.

Answer: TD's average over the last three months (and as Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up) has been 11.2 PPD.

No further comment is needed except to say that this average will ensure his 2000th post will occur sometime in the coming week. I trust appropriate sentiments will be forthcoming.
