Seems that Blackpool is going to go "Vegas" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3604311.stm) with an anticipated increase in local income due to the casinos. Been to Vegas quite a few times and I do enjoy my visits there. Now, for many states that don't permit gambling, the local government run their own "legal" gambling operation - the lottery.

In any case my view of casinos is that a visit is for entertainment purposes and my bankroll for the evening is the price of that entertainment. If someone wants to spend a few hundred dollars or quid on a slap up dinner and a night at the opera then that's fine by me.

I, on the other hand enjoy taking that same amount of cash and be entertained playing blackjack for a few hours. Not only that, but if I play basic strategy I might come away from that evening's entertainment with a few more dollars in my hand than when I started out. Can't say that for the meal and the opera.

There's always a lot of talk about casinos draw the undesirables and turn the neighbourhoods into crime ridden ghettos - haven't seen that in Vegas myself. I do agree, however, that the lottery is a tax on the stupid:E

What do yer think?

I have to agree with you that lotteries are a tax on the stupid...until one day soon when I shall win the jackpot on EuroMillions...because I played! :E
