Cathay Fleet Info

Just wondering if someone can steer me in the right direction:

How specific do the Cathay interview questions get on Cathay's fleet, is the Website pressroom provide enough information or is there other sources that you would recommend....I read that the Cathay's own news publication is good but hard to get a hold of....any recommendations...

Most candidates are asked what types they have on the fleet. Some are further asked if they know how many of each type there are and how many more on order.

Then the questions usually lead on to something else... e.g. What kind of engines do we use on our aircraft?

Fleet Questions:

1. What types do we have? How may aircraft? Types on order?

2. (Holding up 2 models) What are these types? Which one is a 747?

3. 744 vs 743 vs 742, what are the differences?

4. What engines?

5. Apart from 343s all have Trent RB211s......why? Benefits?

6. Fuel in horizontal stabilsier...why? Trim drag, long range cruise etc?

7. (Pointing at winglets) What are these? What are they for? Do all 744s have them? Why not? Why does the 777 not have them?

Anybody knows why the 777 doesn't have any winglets?

I have ask the q? to a few guys, and nobody could come up with an answer.

As for the the fleet, i am wondering if the JP fleet would have accurate numbers on that?

Worth checking out, they sometime enumerate the aircraft on order as well. My JP fleet is 3n years old so i cannot help, but have a look at aviation world in YYZ.

A recent issue of Flight International, (23-29 March 2004), shows the CX fleet as follows:

23 x Airbus A330-300
15 x Airbus A340-300
3 x Airbus A340-600
6 x Boeing 747-200F
19 x Boeing 747-400
5 x Boeing 747-400F
5 x Boeing 777-200
10 x Boeing 777-300

On order: 1 x Boeing 747-400F

A word of caution, I have no way of knowing if these figures are up to date, if CX haven't updated their info to Flight Int. then Flight will publish their last knowwn figures.

Please do not quote me on this....

We know that winglets reduce the induced drag created by wing tip vortices but there are other ways to reduce the drag created by span wise airflow. The 777 does not need winglets to reduce the induced drag because it has wing fences across the wing (about 3 on each side I believe). These fences act as air stoppers and reduce the amount of air allowed to travel from wing root to wing tip thereby reducing the overall drag created.

I believe statements similar to this have been used in the past during interviews (certainly in Cathay) and have succeeded.

The modern 777 has raked wing-tips (as opposed to winglets)...but it does the same thing.

I recommend you do a search on Tech Log. There is pages and pages of good winglit and wingtip info there.


Blueeagle: Your numbers appear correct.... the 15th 777 arrived a few weeks ago so it looks like the numbers are up-to-date.

Standby for more orders in the next few weeks: 14x744 and 7-9 regional (mix of 333 and 773)

Hey...if you go to the cathay website to the press room and put 777 in the search they have an update of their current fleet and aircraft on order...

also, if you get a chance have a look at the Jp fleet, the 2003 and 2004.
You will find ,Cx tail numbers, engines used ...and the airplanes on order and the expected year of delivery.

Don't have to buy the all thing, but take a look, page 23.

if someone has it may be you can scan it and post it. I am sure it will help lots of People.
