G'Day

In the ATPL syllabus it states under Precipitation , Hazards by Precipitation ;

-radar masking (water on radar dome)

I can't find anything in my books - can anyone explain to me what it is other than stating the obvious?

Cheers.

In areas of really heavy rain, it can soak up the radar energy so "It looks like it's clear behind that big red patch on the radar, we'll go through there."

Um, no, bad idea.

The classic picture you see is a red or maximum return paint, with a clear area behind it and a cone of weather falling back from that big paint.
Very bad, don't fall for it.

That's practical experience, the 'books' may want a different answer.
