IDE ones that is......... but it caught the attention of all those closet S&M-ers!!

Have been experiencing a problem ever since I installed me new DVD burner when trying to DVD copy using Intervideo DVD copy which came with the package. Ricoh and Intervideo don't want to know (surprisingly.....) as the software people say the bundle is OEM and Ricoh will have tampered with it, Ricoh say they don't have any problems with this software on XPhome platforms (well they do now says I).

Fact is that my probs only come about when I fire up the software with a blank DVD in the burner - it locks up my processor. If I fire up the programme with nothing in the burner tray it remains chuffed up until I put some media in......

Aditionally it allows me to burn to DVD something I have on my hard drive.

So, me's got to thinkin' maybe the fact that both DVD drives are on the same IDE chain (hence the title - sorry to drag it out so) could be givin' me the shakes???

What d'ya think then?

Presumably you can test it by disabling one of the 2 DVD drives and checking if the problem continues.

Make sure you have the 2 drives jumpered correctly. One must be master and one slave or (better) both on CSL (cable select).

Try changing the position of the drives on the cable.

Try putting one DVD as second device on primary IDE.

Anything in your PC bios that dislikes 2 x CD/DVD devices on secondary IDE? I had a Compaq years ago that just would not have it!

Assuming both DVD devices are "found" by XP, try uninstalling them both from the system and letting windows install the drivers again.

All I can think of at the moment.

I always put one HDD and one CD drive on IDE 1 and the same on IDE2. In the past this always prevented the "buffer underrun" error message. Dont for get to have one master and one slave on each IDE.
Although it can impact on HDD performance the effect is very minor.

Hope this helps

SaabD - Sounds like a load of work but obviously if I want it fixing....... Disconnecting one of the DVD drives isn't likely to help (or will depending how laterally you're expected to think) since the problem is only when copying disc, drive to drive.??? Jumpers are correct. Could try swapping chains tho'. How do you know if the bios doesn't like the arrangement?

ck - I thought I'd read elsewhere on the forum that you should place optical drives on the same chain in order to prevent one slowing the other down but you acknowledge that and seem to be saying that it shouldn't slow the system down that much??

Ok thanks for the suggestions. Better get me boxing gloves on and do some fumblin'.....

the problem is only when copying disc, drive to drive

Sorry, WCF, just not clear from your original post.

If you can do everything except copy drive-drive, then it is unlikely to be BIOS-related.

Wing Commander Fowler,

It could have to do with the Master and Slave Settings for the drives. Some Optical Drives like being the Master others like being the Slave.

It would be worth trying different configurations to see which one works best.

Ok Thanx Richard and guys - looks like I WILL have to go boxing inside after all then..... My System information does seem to have a goodly number of conflicts in it though and whilst for the most part the old thang seems happy enough with it's lot I DO wonder what effect that could be having...... If I copy the info onto a reply here would anyone care to have a fondle???

Wing Commander Fowler,

If you would like to list your hardware setup and also list all your IRQs and every Device on each IRQ, I would be happy to take a look at it.

Take Care,

Richard

Wing Commander Fowler,

All your IRQs are in order. That is not your problem.

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. Sorry I logged out right after posting on your thread so while your timing was perfect, mine was not. :(

Thanx Richard - out of interest do none of the conflicts listed present any concern? :ugh:

Check with your motherboard manufacturer that there are no known conflicts with the hardware that you have.

I think XP has a lot to do with this as well - I tend to have similar problems mainly because of driver conflicts between XP and the manufacturer - it is best to use the manufacturers for obvious reasons - dont let XP try and take over.

It might be worth checking your virtual memory and page file settings (including cache) - even though you are copying on-the-fly, files do still become cached.

Have you tried copying an audio or data CD - if so do you still have the problem ?

Try some different software like DVD shrink or something?

Wing Commander Fowler,

The Possible Conflicts listed are normal for that motherboard and not actually conflicts.

Richard
