View Full Version : W2000 Task Manager kaput

Got some virus probs recently: Virus's were Mydoom and Hacktool but they were quickly identified and eventually purged. It took a few full virus scans to stop those Norton pop-ups.

Now all the apps are working fine, but cont-alt-delete brings up the task manager screen only fleetingly, just long enough to see the running apps all listed but then it vanishes.

Also going to Run then keying cmd brings up the DOS screen fleetingly and then that vanishes as well.

Looks like both these oddities happened around the same time.

Any ideas on a fix?

windy1,

The only guaranteed fix is a fresh install of the OS. You had destructive viruses in your computer. No telling what else has been corrupted.

Take Care,

And, BTW Windy1, you shouldn't feel daunted that you will have to reinstall all your Applications after the reinstall of Windows 2000. You won't even have to re-enter the Product Code. But you will have to re-install the latest Service Pack after the easy bit.

However, I favour a clean re-install on a formatted Hard Disk if the machine begins to look a bit shaky after a year or so. Then you've got the whole nine-yards of a complete system rebuild. :ugh: So make lots of notes about the things that might get overlooked such as DUN settings, Outlook Express Accounts, Outlook Express Rules and so on.
