company financial status

Hello all.
I hope that I am in the right forum.
I have a question to which I need to find some answers.
Is there a way of finding out more information about the financial status of a particular company. ie are they doing as great as they say, what is the balance sheet showing, how true are the figures that a company publishes etc.
Is there an independent observer that has answers to these questions and where?

Best bet might be Companies House website - you can check on any UK company - depends what kind of firm as to what they have to submit but you can get published accounts, debtor info etc for free or a small fee.
