Noticed a smart looking bandit in AD last week with the title Regional Link on the tail. Any one know who they are?

Dog One,

Ibex is correct. It is in fact one of the old Airlines of SA Bandits, repainted since Air North took them over. Air North now have Emu Airways and it looks like they will use these Bandits on their Adelaide - Kingscote run.

Airnorth have a Bras in the paint shop in Alice being painted in the new Livery. Should look good when done. Those who designed it still have Ansett fresh in their minds however. Lots of stars.

Coalition of regional airlines takes flight


REGIONAL airlines are joining forces under a major umbrella group in a bid to secure the survival of vital flights to country centres and greater cost advantages to clients.

RegionalLink Airlines was unveiled at Adelaide Airport yesterday as an umbrella group for various existing regional airlines. The new coalition will provide the airlines with shared efficiencies as well as cost advantages through a greater buying power expected to be passed on to travellers.

Initial regional airline members are Darwin-based Airnorth, the Airlines of South Australia and Adelaide-Kangaroo Island specialist Emu Airways.

Other regional airlines are in talks to possibly join the coalition and among these is Mt Gambier's O'Connor Airlines.

RegionalLink Airlines chief executive is Ian Mitchell, a former top-level executive at Qantas, and once SA state manager for the former TAA which became Australian Airlines and ultimately the domestic arm of Qantas.

He said some regional airlines had been fragile and, lacking the support enjoyed by larger companies, had been forced to cease services if there was a downturn in a country town.

"Sustainability of flights will be a main advantage of the airlines being part of RegionalLink," Mr Mitchell said yesterday.

"(RegionalLink Airlines) can help keep cost structures down and there will be a greater range of air fares, including some stimulatory fares."

Member airlines will be able to share a reservations system, purchasing, a yield management system (which leads to a wider range of fares), ground handling and information technology.

Airlines of SA already has enjoyed a 20 per cent drop in fuel and insurance costs.

The airlines who are part of the coalition will carry RegionalLink Airlines blue-and-silver livery on the aircraft but will keep their own brand names and logos on the fuselage to retain identification in country communities. The coalition is the concept of Darwin's Capiteq Limited which acquired Emu Airways on Friday.

It believes cost sharing and greater buying power will help the otherwise small, independent airlines to survive and prosper.

An expanded route network could eventually follow.

Regional airlines that have joined so far are all affiliates of Qantas which can handle baggage for onward flights interstate and overseas.

Geez, the Advertiser makes it sound good doesn't it.

What it fails to mention is that Emu Airways didn't become a member, in fact, it was bought by Airnorth. At this stage it seems that no Emu Airways flight crew or aircraft are being used. From what I've been told, all the pilots were made redundant.

In a EMB120 you cannot get a MTOW ex PLO due runway length.
Latest Regionallink Brasilia was seen in Darwin on the weekend after paint. Should start in service in Darwin by weeks end.

Bear in mind that the Bras has a zero fuel weight of about 10.9 from memory and a max t/off of 11.9. One wouldn't need a 1000 kgs of fuel to operate the 30 min sector back to Adelaide. So indeed the Bras could lift a max payload from PLO with the temps up to about 38 (again from memory) The ASA F-27's couldn't operate at MTOW out of PLO either.

I did not say you could not carry 30 passengers. You just cannot get a MTOW departure. There is a big difference. It is only a 35 minute sector or close to.

In winter time you would able to depart at MTOW, but why?, you can only carry fuel above 10.9 tonne. Even with AD requiring 60 holding, that is only probably another 400 kgs, so on the examples given, would only be 11.7 tonne take off, still 300 kgs below MTOW.

The TOW out of a 1499m at sea level nil wind at 30 degrees in the Jungleprop will be 11600 kgs. At 35 degrees it will be limited to 11500 kgs. Throw in 10 knots of headwind and the 30 degree day weight will become 11885 kgs and the 35 degree day 11840 kgs.

Depending on power setting and FL the burn per hour is between 400 and 500 kgs per hour.
