If the stupid guy had a serious alcohol problem, did any fellow pilots or family members try to call the NAPAP Committee (pilots who help other pilots), and begin an intervention?. .. .Someone referred to the other disasters or near disasters (including the FEDEX pilots who suffered permanent injuries, and lost their medicals). He forgot to mention the SilkAir crash over in Malaysia somewhere. That Captain had some serious problems before the so-called "accident".. .. .I can not imagine keeping a pistol in the cockpit-the idea of seeing two or three people [not including jumpseaters] struggling with the pistol pointing anywhere before it fires, makes me cringe. By the time a pilot gets it out, unless it is always on top of our flightbags, we don't know who else will get their hands on it. Check how long it takes your FO or FE to get the crash axe out. Do we want the mentally unstable passengers (they are still out there and we don't have their names highlighted) to know that a loaded pistol is just inside the door, as we come thru the cockpit door and find out, darn it, some lady just went in the lavatory right before we planned to go take a leak...? Certain sprays could be effective, and can not drill a hole through the other pilot, or a fuel control lever or flap handle as we fly to an airport, (with no fuel for an alternate) which has only short runways etc?. .. .Our nation should have required serious registration of all guns decades ago (and fingerprints required from all people who sell anything at pawnshops etc), and not allowed such unregulated deals at gun 'shows' to have taken place for so long. But I see nothing wrong with ownership, if one is checked beforehand and is not a convicted felon etc. If backgrounds were not checked, who says that a felon would avoid buying a gun at WalMart etc? Nothing personal here, just expressing my fears, mostly for the future of our nation-it may already be too late.. . . . [ 13 March 2002, 06:36: Message edited by: Ignition Override ]

Better mention the car park in Manchester unless you want to see the lock...

Hehe, it's funny how Rumours & News only counts as just that, only if it is in europe. My vote is for globalisation of the site! ('scuse me goin' off the topic)

THAT makes ME cringe. Does the thought of sky marshalls shooting in the direction of the cockpit make you feel any better? Not that they are that common. Keep in mind that there is nothing but air separating the baddies from the marshalls!. .. .
quote:
By the time a pilot gets it out, unless it is always on top of our flightbags, we don't know who else will get their hands on it.

2 words....... Maybe worse, due to the fact that one can train themselves for a certain level of resistance to these sprays. I've done some LEO training with the local PD, and I watched a guy take a pretty good shot of pepper spray in the mug, and was still in the fight.. .. .
quote:
Our nation should have required serious registration of all guns decades ago (and fingerprints required from all people who sell anything at pawnshops etc), and not allowed such unregulated deals at gun 'shows' to have taken place for so long.

This is entirely another debate, but many municipalities have such laws, and the ones with the most draconian laws are usually the most crime ridden (see: L.A., NYC, D.C. etc....) despite them. . .. .As for the political football that is called the gun show "loophole", do you even know what that refers to? Have you ever been to a gun show? Try walking up to a dealer and buying a gun with no paperwork, and see how fast you are shown the door. You'd have better luck in Wal Mart. . .. .The "loophole" is that person to person intrastate transfers are allowed. This has ALWAYS been the case. If I (a citizen) wanted to sell you (another citizen) a firearm, there are no forms to fill out if we are from the same state. So, if I bring a gun to a gunshow, and you want to buy it from me, that is legal, as long as we are in and from the state that the show is being held. Interstate is a different matter, and usually needs to be handled through licensed dealers. It is no different than placing a classified ad and selling it.. .. .
quote:
But I see nothing wrong with ownership, if one is checked beforehand and is not a convicted felon etc. If backgrounds were not checked, who says that a felon would avoid buying a gun at WalMart etc? I tend to agree with backround checks, and don't have too much heartburn with registration, per se, BUT, history has shown, in almost every case, that registration inevitably led to confiscation. Basically, the law abiding are punished, and the criminals still have guns (like in those previously mentioned "civilized" countries, where they are so civilized that they can't be trusted with simple tools......).. .. .Oh, how about that Car Park in Manchester. I can't believe that they need such a large one. It looks like the entire state of New Hampshire can parrk there with room for a few Ma**Holes! . . . . [ 13 March 2002, 16:05: Message edited by: Tripower455 ]
