I've actually never thought about this until now, what is the average wage range that a Qantas pilot earns- more specifically a Second Officer?

A while ago someone posted a link to a website which allowed you to look at industry awards- but what does it really end up like with allowances and other costs rolled in?

I'm barely earning enough to pay for my Maggi noodles at the moment so I'm just checking to see the light at the end of the tunnell.....

(By the way, despite the low pay the flying is still worth it!)

MM, how long is a piece of string?

Once you check out as a S/O you'll do about 1000-1100 credit hours per annum at about $60 per hour. Don't think too much about the allowances as they vary by trip length, port etc. One year I got $18K, another year I got $9K. A percentage may be taxed and you do actually spend a fair bit out and about o/s. Overtime will also weigh into the equation as well so that is a little hard to factor. 744 S/Os may do anywhere between 100 and 250 hours of o/t for the year depending on where they are flying, length of sector, etc.

Pay rises for years of service go up by about 3-5% per annum depending on aircraft type and rank. The years of service only increases to year 12 from memory.

Lets just say that is a satisfactory wage considering the crap that most (but not me luckily and I'm forever grateful) aspiring QF pilots go through.

Probably around 50% of what he's being paid.

In that case fifty percent of nothing is nothing.

And yes it's only natural to think about these things when you've been earning so little for so long.

I think you should ask what the Virgin and Jetstar drivers earn.

Being an over paid QANTAS pilot is now pretty much history.

Management have sucessfully convinced pilots that they are worth marginally more than bus drivers and as a group we have agreed.

Most aspiring airline pilots can now look forward to pay rates closer to that of the low cost carriers.
