My Windows XP often fails to shut down. Occasionally Explorer or Outlook appears to be running in background even though the programs and all tabs are closed. WMS and System Idle Process may request manual shut down.

I have tried several options of shutdown / Restart, and turning off broadband etc before shutting down but without success, any ideas please.

safetypee,

The link ORAC posted is an excellent resource for troubleshooting.

I just wanted you to run a Virus Scan with:

Trend Micro's HouseCall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

Just to make sure it is not a virus preventing you from shutting down. (It is one of the payloads of certain viruses.)

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. If you would give us the specs on your hardware, and when was the last time WinXP was installed, (was it a fresh install or an upgrade), we might be able to help pinpoint the problem.

If all else fails, try contacting Tony Draper. Seems he has a machine that shuts down really well.
