Need some volunteers to go to http://www.pprune.org/forums/index.php and register and have a play with some new software I am testing to replace this bulletin board.. .. .Don't be too creative as anything posted there will be deleted before the migration when it is decided to go ahead. Feel free to post your views either on there or here. Just use it for a while and see what you think.

Very high tech looking but I for one don't like the way you hve to scroll sideways to see all there is to see. Can't it be made to fit the screen width?

8th Mar 2002, 07:55
Gunner. .. .Change your screen res, it will fit in then.. .. .NAP

Then everything else will be wrong!

8th Mar 2002, 08:09
All of my computers are in 1024 X 768 and everything is just dandy!

8th Mar 2002, 08:13
Well. It's good overall I'd say.. .Dunno about the yellow scroll bars! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" /> . .. .I DON'T like the "Report this post to a moderator" and "rate this thread" options. Puts me in mind of (shudders) airliners.net forums which are . . . well . . . just a bit too. . . liberal. . .. .Like the calendar idea . . . PPRuNe birthdays!. .. .Don't like the little icons next to the topics in the forum because they don't have color like the blue arrow or the big fish thing. In fact there seems to be an overall lack of color except yellow. Oh well! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> . .. .What does "Quote" mean next to the Email and Profile buttons, etc? Clicked there and it brought me somewhere else.. .. .Does the ignore list mean you can't see that person's posts? And what does the "Buddy list" do?. .. .And one more thing, the profile visible seems to have more fields than the one you can fill out, like "real name".. .. .And one of the major improvements of the recent update to this software was that you could put in a smilie or italics etc wherever the cursor was, instead of it appearing at the end . . . that is gone in the new software.. .. .I think that about does it for my constructive critisizm! PS who voted "no" on my poll? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="mad.gif" /> . .. .Go for it!. .. .SFly <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />. . . . <small>[ 08 March 2002, 03:36: Message edited by: SFly ]</small>

Not_Another_Pot. .. .Tried the settings and everything else came out too small????

8th Mar 2002, 09:11
Well it wasn't me!

8th Mar 2002, 14:04
Just like your first "glass cockpit" endorsement. Once you get used to all the new buttons it'll work just fine !!!. .. .(OK Danny there's the PR, now send me my ops. manual.....puleeeeeese!!!!!!)

8th Mar 2002, 15:46
It's OK, not sure about the colour scheme, though! Navy & yellow?....Dunno.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="rolleyes.gif" />. . . . <small>[ 08 March 2002, 10:47: Message edited by: sweety ]</small>

8th Mar 2002, 16:02
After the big switch, will all the options and buttons remain? .. or will they be reduced/removed as the server load increases?

8th Mar 2002, 17:27
I know i'm only a new guy here but for my tuppence worth.... .theres a bit of a fight going on with the colours, all a bit bright. and how does the star rating work?. .bear in mind I can barely work this stuff <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

8th Mar 2002, 17:53
If this here software ain't broken, why change it?. .In fact I liked the old one a tad better. (The colors at least)

8th Mar 2002, 18:00
I couldn’t get myself logged in, but I had a quick look and it’s pretty cool.

8th Mar 2002, 18:57
What? User name can not be shorter than 4 characters? WhatEVER will I do? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Dear Uncle Danny,. .. .Ah well, these things are always changing with time. This lot'd bitch like hell if there were no upgrades whatsoever for a couple of years. The site would soon start looking stale.. .. .The one thing I don't like about the new software is that the button's are a bit of a mess, IMHO. The buttons you now have are looking great, so why not carry 'em over?. .. .TW

8th Mar 2002, 19:49
Danny,. .. .Loads of colours mate?!?!? Seemed a bit complicated at first coz there´s a lot going on on the screen know what I mean? Thought it was pretty good though, yellow and blue, Wimbledon FC colours, good choice! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

8th Mar 2002, 23:40
A few thoughts after a quick look around......... .. .New features to play with are nice.. .Chance to "individualise" is fun.. .Colours rather faded and boring IMHO; make the place a bit sad-looking.. .Possibility to format/colour text is treat for the eye but cumbersome in use.

8th Mar 2002, 23:50
It's ok, but it's really up to you Danny.. .. .This type is fine and the new one is ok.The one thing I do like about the new system is that you can see who is on line, that can be fun, or then again maybe not. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />. . . . <small>[ 08 March 2002, 18:51: Message edited by: con-pilot ]</small>

Just a small thought. You have reduced the area for advertising on the side of the page. After all adverts are good for the old exchequer. Otherwise, no real problem

Not convinced....prefer it as it is at the moment.

Lots to play with. Can only be an improvement. Colours on front end a little alarming how about going a few shades paler?. . . . <small>[ 10 March 2002, 04:48: Message edited by: somewhatconcerned ]</small>

Changes are hardly terrifying. Surely the whole point is if it's faster and somehow helps with the overloading, who gives a stuff what it looks like? Let's go there ASAP.

10th Mar 2002, 06:28
Big if there, bins.. .I can't help thinking that it would be better to forgo fancy functions and dedicate more server cacpacity to the basic purpose. Readin' and postin'. The rest is just 'would-be-nice'. KISS.

I posted a reply here a day or two ago but it doesn't apear to have materialised. Now, the new stuff wouldn't let me log on and I DO know my name and password, my post here vanished... Erm, erm.....I haven't been excommunicated have I? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

10th Mar 2002, 10:43
It wouldn't allow me to login, so it gets a huge THUMBS DOWN from me. I note that there was no poll option to say ... "No I don't like it", or even "Room for HEAPS of improvement", so I felt that the poll itself was deliberately skewed.. .. .Therefore I couldn't, in all conscience, cast any vote at all.. .. .In the final analysis, this is still your site Danny. You can - and probably will - feel free to ignore this post. Indeed, whatever the forum will look like, I'll undoubtedly continue to use it ... as long as it lets me login, of course.

10th Mar 2002, 13:21
Yeah, let's go Danny. A change is as good as a holiday! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />

10th Mar 2002, 15:28
As I said before, IF it is going to reduce the number of times I get the Gone to the Pub opening page, it can't happen quickly enough.. .. .BTW, how come my UBB has been disabled all day, yet there are posts galore with smilies and formatting posted today? Is UBB enabled for different people at different times?. .. .Grrr.

Tartan Gannet
10th Mar 2002, 15:55
Yes Danny I like it! . .. .Of course having "Orange and Purple" as the colours on the opening page was bound to endear it to me!

For the luddites amongst you, you have to register to get into the test forums. Once the migration from this to the new software has taken place then you will have automatic access.. .. .As I mentioned, this is only a test at the moment and any registrations or posts will be deleted before the transfer. As for the design, I am trying to make it appear as similar to this as possible. The main bebefit will be behind the scenes as it is all run on an sql database which should speed things up and reduce the load on the server. The actual design will have little effect on that.. .. .WHat is all this about the colours? As far as I can see it is the same as the colours we have now. Perhaps some people haven't figured out how to set the resolution or colour depth of their monitors. Also, many people seem to be stumped by their browsers cache. All the people complaining about not being to get in but have seen posts made during that time need to check their browser settings or with their ISP in case their ISP is using cacheing.. .. .Apart from about 30 mins during the middle of the day over the last week there are not that many 'gone to the pub' messages. If you are one of the many people who seem to log in during their lunch hour in the UK then that is the time you are most likely to see that message.. .. .In the meantime, please just try out a few of the new features in the new software. If you are not sure what to do then please read the FAQ's as they are fairly comprehensive.

10th Mar 2002, 17:57
Know about colour & browsing settings, cached loot as well....... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> . .. .Colours of the in-house-icons in the new place STILL pale and sicly looking. . .Animated icons from other pages look fine.

11th Mar 2002, 01:35
Errrrrr... Very nice, but...... .. .If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....

11th Mar 2002, 03:39
I like the option of being able to select your own time zone. . .. . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> McD: Have you considered lengthening your name to "Old McD"?

Capt PPRuNe

Minimum length for Username now 3 characters. Go mad!. .. .Emoticons etc will be tweaked in due course.

Whilst it looks ok now, I have to ask, is this another Mircosoft Demo? You know the one, looks fabulous, and then you by the real thing only to find its bluddy expensive and gives you nothing better than you had (except if its XP which has fantastic crash recovery, and needs it a lot).

Overall, tick vg - like it. Took a while to find the logout button - have to go to top level PPRuNe Forums or start to post a reply to find the button. I like the ability to search for a topic and, on balance, it's worth replacing the logout with the search facility as you get into the lower levels of forums. It's also handy having the cookies remember your details so that you don't have to wait to go through the login process every time. . .. .Good Job.. .. .But can someone explain how Mornington Crescent works? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="confused.gif" />

13th Mar 2002, 19:19
yep I like it but I wonder about the number of views being registered. Guess it will just show me how boring I can be <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

FYI, the test board doesn't use the current registration you have for this board. You have to register if you want to play with it.

After the migration from this board to the new one then anyone registered on here should be able to access the new one without re-registering (fingers crossed).

As mentioned before, everything posted on the new board as well as new registrations will be deleted before the tranfer takes place.

15th Mar 2002, 03:43
So Danny (or anyone from PPRuNe admin), when is this famous migration going to take place? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="confused.gif" /> How soon before PPRuNe becomes a new frontier of strange and exotic buttons and codes? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> . .. .Anyway, good luck; here's to a successful transfer! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> . .. .SFly

15th Mar 2002, 03:45
As soon as the script that does all the work is finished. Hopefully next week.

15th Mar 2002, 04:06
Danny, will we be able to carry across our existing reg. details such as date of registration, number of posts? Or is that a very silly question?

16th Mar 2002, 00:57
So now we're calling Rumors and News "Reporting Points"??? . .. .I don't know about that . . . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="redface.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="tongue.gif" />

16th Mar 2002, 02:08
OK I have just been to play with the new software and have the following comments:. .. .1. there are many more functions - surely the trade off between optimising speed of basic functions is going to be lost by the additional features;. .. .2. can the new system cope with the volume of posts when we all get up to speed?. .. .3. the new choice of fonts is fun as is selecting colours;. .. .4. the logout button could be more obviously displayed!. .. .5. to have a buddy list might be fun but the cp screen obscures the main screen;. .. .6. does the new system mean that there will be no more chat? or did I just not browse long enough?. .. . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> hope this helps Mr Fyne sir!!

16th Mar 2002, 11:09
Yeh ok Ive since got in, but every bloodey time I try to send a test post on the Test forum all I get is "Error 502 Bad Gateway" (whatever the hell THAT is!).

20th Mar 2002, 12:21
When I registered to test the new software in my user setup I selected the "notify me when someone posts to a thread I am interested in" option (words to that effect). I am pleased to report that the notification worked although, Danny, I did receive two emails for the same post to that thread (and I checked, the poster had not submitted two posts).. .. .Hope this helps <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />
