View Full Version : Which ink-jet printer (that's available) can I use directly on CD-ROMs?

For my small business, I would like to be able to print directly on the white surface of CD-ROMs designed for that purpose.

I read a lot of reviews about the Epson 900-series printers that did such printing, but they are either out-of-stock-continually or discontinued by all the U.S. retailers I have tried.

Any tips are appreciated. Thank you.

Interesting development to watch out for - although it won't be available for a while yet (a year or so) - is CD RW (and DVD) drives that use the same laser to "etch" text and graphics onto the back of the media. Of course, the media has to support this also. Expect an initial premium for drives and discs, quickly falling as all drives and media support the standard.

Yamaha have been doing it to the write side for a while. I've had a CRW-F1 (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=YAMAHA+CRW-F1E+CD-RW&index=0) for over a year now. It uses up some of the writing room but looks amazing. You just have to be careful to get compatible media. :ok:

I can highly reccomend the Canon i865. Come with the kit that you shove in the front of the printer and away it goes.
Brilliant photo printer as well. Big :ok: from me.

Thanks ORAC and the others for these tips! This is the kind of information I was looking for to make a decision.

Best wishes,

Eboy just noticed you are in DC. The blurb I got with the Canon i865 which I think is the i860 in the States is that in the States it wasnt supplied with the attachment which you insert into the front of the printer to print ono CDs. I'm sure it was something to do with copyright but I may well be wrong.
