Anyone out there know if type 1 diabetes can prevent a PPL student from solo-ing, or from even commencing training for that matter?
Thanks in advance

Found some useful gen on the CAA website

Its worth a look
here (http://search.caa.co.uk/query.html?charset=iso-8859-1&ht=0&qp=&qt=diabetes&submit1=+search+&qs=&col=aandocs&col=caaws&qc=&pw=555px&ws=1&la=en&qm=0&st=1&nh=10&lk=1&rf=0&oq=&rq=0&si=0) if anyone's interested. I was going to delete the post, but it may be worth retaining for reference in the future. Mods obviously delete if you feel its not of significant interest.

The FAA allows certification for people with type 1 diabetes providing they fit certain criteria.

And they are allowed only to fly in US NAS.

Found the attached in JAR-FCL3, which is the JAR medical bible - obviously the CAA have some national differences, also for the NPPL, things may be different.
JAR-FCL 3.295 says:
(c) Applicants with diabetes mellitus may be assessed as fit only in accordance with paragraphs 2 and 3 Appendix 4 Subpart C.
(d) Applicants with diabetes requiring insulin shall be assessed as unfit.
Then Appendix 4 to Subparts B and C says:
Metabolic, nutritional and endocrine disorders (See JAR–FCL 3.175 and 3.295)
2 Glycosuria and abnormal blood glucose levels require investigation. Certification may be considered by
the AMS if normal glucose tolerance is demonstrated (low renal threshold) or impaired glucose tolerance without diabetic pathology is fully controlled by diet and regularly reviewed.
3 The use of antidiabetic drugs is disqualifying. In selected cases, however, the use of biguanides [or alpha-glucosidase inhibitors] may be acceptable for multi-pilot operations (Class 1 ‘OML’) or unrestricted (Class 2) certification. [The use of sulphonylureas may be acceptable for restricted Class 2 re-certification.]
