hi all.

To all those of you who use JNB info,a little question. If you lose comms with them (either due to terrain or distance),And you're squawking, then continue your flight, checking in at all the appropriate points (ie over head manned airfields,on approach etc),is any sort of alarm raised as to your status?

i've lost comms a number of times coming into fala from pilanesberg at 6500' usually before FARG,but continued squawking and just changed as i entered the magalies gf to 124.8.Do jnb info take factors such as line of sight transmission and distance into account,or is there any sort of alarm raised if you lose comms (like checking with your destination etc to see you arrive)?

If you fly FAPN-FALA you should have a flight plan. On departure, FAPN sends JHB Info and FALA a departure signal. If you lose comms with Info, or never even speak to them doesn't matter. If you dont pitch at FALA, thats when they start searching for you. If you fly to a private strip somewhere and lose comms is not serious in itself either. You just continue flying along. The chap at Info will just disregard your flight and throw it out of the system. Its such a big chunk of airspace and he knows he will not have contact with aircraft all the time, even at higher levels.

If you filed a flight plan requesting search and rescue and you never cancel your SAR because you lost comms, then you should cancel telephonically upon landing, otherwise they start looking for you and you will be billed if they find you sitting by the fire having a castle and didnt cancel your SAR just because you lost comms!

For that reason it can help to put your cell phone on the plan. Have seen it happen, fortunately they called the guys first!!!
