Hi all - i need some advice if you dont mind:

I am thinking very seriously about undertaking an FAA Aircraft Dispatchers course - my concern arises from the fact that it states on many sites advertising this course that the minimum age is 23 years old (with some sites stating that i can complete this course if im over 21 years old but i will only be able to work as an "Assistant Flight Dispatcher" until i reach the age of 23) .... I am turning 21 in April and hope to begin the course in May ... Can someone advise me about my situation regarding this? I should point out that i would be intending to use the Licence outside of the US(actually, in Ireland hopefully) - would this make the age limit void?? :ugh:

Any info GREATFULLY apprecaited!!

The regulation stated that you have to reach 23 before the FAA will issue you with a certificate. Between 21-22 after you passed your check and test you will be given a letter to say that you have passed all the requirement for the licence and to use it to exchange a licence upon your 23rd birthday.

I am not sure about the Irish requirement sorry.

You say that until i reach 23 i will hold a letter that states that i have passed all the requirements - does this letter basically mean that i am fully qualified? and do you think there would be any restrictions imposed upon me until i read my 23rd birthday?

Up until about 5 years ago, I was a designated examiner for the ADX ticket here in the States, so we'll see how good my memory is... ;_

As others have said, if you're less than 23, once you complete the course and take the USS FAA exam, you will get a letter of competency, which you exchange for the license when you turn 23.

As far as "using" the license, the FAA probably doesn't consider the license to exist until you turn 23, so if the FAA license is a requirement of your employer (US, Iceland, or anywhere else) even though you're only working as an "assistant" you may have a problem until you hit 23. Nest to check out the specific requirments of your employer, and confirmation from FAA that you can't excercise the license until you phuiscally have it.

It is indeed Sheffield that im looking at - it seems to be a very good course indeed!!

SeniorDispatcher - so you believe regardless of me not working in the US that i will not receive my licence until im 23? Hmmm i'm going to contact a few airlines to see what their opinion is...

Is there any other option instead of the FAA route that would allow to hold a licence before im 23?

FireFox, FAR part 65 referes. It used to be possible to work under part 135 and 121 supplemental operations, and Senior Dispatcher correct me if I'm wrong here, without a full licence.


PART 65--CERTIFICATION: AIRMEN OTHER THAN FLIGHT CREWMEMBERS--Table of Contents

Subpart C--Aircraft Dispatchers (Eff. 4-6-00)

Sec. 65.53 Eligibility requirements: General.

(a) To be eligible to take the aircraft dispatcher knowledge test, a
person must be at least 21 years of age.
(b) To be eligible for an aircraft dispatcher certificate, a person
must--
(1) Be at least 23 years of age;
(2) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English
language;
(3) Pass the required knowledge test prescribed by Sec. 65.55 of
this part;
(4) Pass the required practical test prescribed by Sec. 65.59 of
this part; and
(5) Comply with the requirements of Sec. 65.57 of this part.

What I'm saying that is if your specific employment is predicated upon your having the FAA license, you will NOT possess that license (your having taken the training and having passed the ADX test aside) until you turn 23.

Not that I'm personally aware of.

Alternatively come to sunny England where all you need is the clothes that your wearing.
Thats right walk into the nearest airport job-center and within 2 weeks you too could be left to cock-up that manual loadsheet on an a300-600r.
Seriously its true anyone over the age of 18 can do this in the U k, i did it just this way,and was constantly amazed by the lack of regulation and qualifications for the job. :8

Do the CAA offer a similar qualification to the FAA one and is the FAA certificate valid in the UK??
