Airline Security – what security!

Just sat down with a coffee for five minutes, and I borrowed a copy of someone’s Daily Star.

Page 9 and there is a picture of Britney Spears.
The caption states that she looks a bit “stressed out” as she has just come off a transatlantic flight.
Poor little love.

Part of her attire, obviously a fashion statement, through her jumper sleeve is at least six large safety pins.

Why was she allowed to board a civil aircraft with such obviously sharp objects in her possession?

Incredulous!

I mention this as I flew back from the US two days ago, and was made to remove the paperclips from the paperwork contained in my flight case, for “flight safety” and “to comply with current US airline security regulations”

A mate has frequently travelled in/out of UK/USA with hyperdermic needles [diabetes] for past couple of years. Never once searched at X-Ray.

Had a rediculous passage through flight connextions at LHR recently. One of the little green nasty BAA security men insisted on inspecting the contents of my wallet, including each bank note! Way, way, over the top. He didn't seem to like being asked if they were looking for exploding bank notes.
I can't understand why the BAA security employees, attached to terminal 1 have such a rude and poor attitude to passengers. This is not the first time I have come across this attitude from the green clothed bodies in terminal 1. There is no need for their bad attitude. The words please and thank you are sadly missing, with orders being given, not requests. Terminal 2 is the exact opposite.
Seems there is one rule for celebs and one for the plebs.

031846 - I don't know how accurate your information is and I suspect that there is possibly more to the situation than you may be aware of.

Just out of interest, are there any other specific industry security practises that you would care to post up in a public forum. It would be a shame to keep them to yourself after all!

I'm not saying that we can't discuss security errors here, just suggesting that we should think a little more carefully when doing so.

Believe me Tightslot that is no 'industry secret' loads of people outside the industry I know are aware of that, even my local Post OPffice staff...as EMS packages don't (usually) get screened by customs inbound so if u by a notebook from the USA get it sent DHL to avoid potential import taxes...works everytime.

Well, now a few more people outside the industry are aware of it. I still think a degree of caution and common sense should be exercised here, but we'll agree to differ if you wish?

Point taken but 'Stable door...has bolted etc.' springs to mind...it may highlight to the powers that be that whilst they wander around enforcing all their new security measures (some of which in my opinion are of questionable value and purely for show...but that's another story) there are obvious security flaws/areas which are still not being addressed...and are not only obvious to us in the industry but to anyone else with a bit of investigation and common sense :cool:

I had this very discussion with a very senior member of the Guardia Civil recently...he asked 'if you were a terrorist what would you do' he sat and listened for an hour plus...and admitted 'they hadn't thought of that' :{

Maybe if more of the new security empire builders asked more of us in the industry (like this) we would achieve a far more reliable and encompassing security system without the disruption it now causes...oh I can but dream :hmm:

My wife suffers from a medical condition, which means she must wear a hat for wind/air con protection, when we are travelling. The only airport where she has been asked to remove her head gear, so they could see what was underneath, was Manchester. The BAA mob are more interested in being seen to do the job rather than doing it correctly with a smile and civility.

Whatever and wherever, anyone involved in aviation and security nowadays is situated between a rock and a hard place!

It may interest you to know that yesterday (09 Feb), a grenade was discovered at LGW in checked baggage belonging to a passenger allegedly travelling to Tunis. Whether this was a "plant" by the CAA inspectorate is not known, (but I suspect it was as the incident hasn't reached the news media!) The passenger was summoned at the gate, duly offloaded and frog-marched away by armed police.

Evidence indeed that the detection rate is improving!

Don't knock the "Green Men" - they're having a rough time!!!
