US firm bags new Doha airport contract

Doha: The Government of Qatar yesterday signed a contract with US engineering and construction giant Bechtel to develop the new Doha International Airport with phase one costing $2.5bn (QR9.125bn).

Bechtel’s engineering, project and construction management (EPCM) contract will include the design, project management and construction management of all three development phases of the new airport.

“The new Doha International Airport will be designed to be one of the best airports in the world. It will set the benchmark for all future airports across the world. The new airport will also position Doha and Qatar as an important international aviation hub for at least the next 50 years”, said Abdul Aziz Mohamed Al Noaimi, Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of the Civil Aviation Authority.

He said the new airport will also allow the national flagship, Qatar Airways to continue its expansion and fly to many more destinations.

The first phase of the new airport would begin this year and was expected to be completed by the end of 2008, when the new airport will open. The third and final stage will be completed in 2015, increasing the passenger handling capacity to 50 million, he said.

He told reporters that it would be difficult at this stage to precisely tell the cost of the two following phases, but he estimated the total cost of the three phases to be $5bn.

Phase one of the project will include reclaiming nearly half of the site from the sea with 50m cubic metres of fill; a 140,000-square metre three-storey terminal with 24 contact gates; and three major road interchanges to access the new airport. Detailed design work will commence this year and continue throughout 2005 as the site is reclaimed and construction of the new major facilities begin in 2005.

Abdul Aziz Al Noaimi and Dr James Van Hoften, senior vice-president and managing director of Aviation, Bechtel Ltd signed the contract. Also present at the function were Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways; Peter Pappas, Project Manager, Pappas; Rudy Vercelli, Director, Global Business Aviation Services, Bechtel Ltd; and Ibrahim Al Misnad, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr James Van Hoften said: “The project will be a world-class facility and should set a standard in the next century. We are pleased to be here to do this and we expect to have a long and fruitful relationship and we expect this will be a very successful project”.

As traffic and demand grows, the mid-term phase will see the addition of a further 16 contact gates and an extension of the terminal building to 219,000 square metres and a suspended monorail or “people mover” to transport passengers through the terminal.

The airport will be designed in such a way that while all the extensions are taking place in phase two and three there will be no disruption to the facility, passenger or air traffic, said Akbar Al Baker.

The final phase of development will include the addition of another 40 contact gates, bringing the total to 80, together with a further extension to the terminal building to 416,000 square metres, capable of handling 50 million passengers per year.

Akbar Al Baker said that the 50 million passengers per year will be reached when the airport becomes one of the main hub in the region and the way it expands to become extremely efficient.

“Time is a deciding factor for any airline willing to come to this region and Qatar will be the most up-to-date and most user-friendly airport, thus it will be attracting more transit and traffic, because in addition to the airport, Qatar is also going to be a major centre of growth in the region”, he said.

QR would have to operate 100+ A380s to get the numbers to 50 million... Sounds like a great opportunity to fly an A380 if you are interested.

GF carried about 4-5 million last year was it? Emirates about 8 million (give or take. If anyone has more accurate numbers, please post them). What is this guy thinking of? ORD carried about 66 million in 2001. Does anyone see DOH turn into another ORD?

Not easy to get accurate figures. Doha airport says it can handle 4.6m pax per year now, rising to 6m by the end of the current development phase, in time for Asian Games in 2006, with estimates of up to 500,000 visitors.

Qatar Airways carried 1.85m pax in 2002, and estimates 3m for this year(2004). By contrast, Emirates currently carrying 9.5m per year, estimating rise to 25m by 2015.
