Piston engine lifetimes

Would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction regarding the overhaul of piston engines on charter (class B) aircraft. Is it still a requirement for a factory remanufacture after 10 years? Can't find a reference to it anywhere :confused:

Got a lycoming coming up ten years and looking at options.

Sure; go to CASA website, ADs, Engines. Pull up AD/ENG/4, Amdt 9 (just released). The short version is that if your aircraft is on Manufacturers System of Maintenance (NOT CASA Sched 5) the TBO applies, rather than calendar life. You will need to ask CASA Airworthiness Section (Navigator Place Hendra) for an approval. Any queries, talk to Les Lyons at CASA 131 757.

BTW, never been any requirement for factory reman. Used to need to have a bulk strip after 10 years if still HTR to TBO.

While on the subject of overhaul, I wonder about 'on condition?'

How long are they really ment to go for? :hmm::hmm:
Or is it now 100hour extensions for ever or until something goes wrong?

There seems to be a lot of aircraft around for sale (training types) that all advertise that engine is on condition

Depends on the LAME who signs it out - if he is familiar with the aircraft and or has been looking after it for a while, and the oil uplift and cylinder leakdowns are OK, then he may be happy to sign it out on condition - limited to PVT & AWK. Don't expect to walk in to a shop cold and ask a LAME to sign out an engine he's never seen though; won't happen
