BA/Comair prepares to take on Nationwide
January 16, 2004

By Audrey d'Angelo

Cape Town - British Airways/Comair will challenge Nationwide head on in March by starting three flights a week to Livingstone on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls.

BA/Comair and SAA already fly to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side of the border but Nationwide alone has been flying to Livingstone for the past two years.

The Livingstone route has grown increasingly popular, particularly with European visitors, because of recent events in Zimbabwe and the opening of Sun International's Zambesi resort on the Zambian side of the falls. Nationwide has built up the route to eight flights a week.

Stuart Cochrane, BA/Comair's executive sales manager, said it would start the new route on March 28 with three flights a week, which would connect with British Airways international flights arriving at Johannesburg International Airport.

Nationwide has been taking foreign passengers directly to Livingstone from Johannesburg, cutting out an overnight stop in Pretoria offered by most tour operators.

Chris Hoare, Nationwide's commercial executive, said connecting flights from Johannesburg International to the Kruger Park had proved particularly popular with visitors from the UK. He said the destination was still developing and there was room for expansion.
