Any takers for the flying toaster/shed?

redsnail
14th Jan 2004, 00:39
Definitely the SD 330. :yuk:
I fly G-SSWA in the UK. It might have been a reasonable beasty when it rolled out of the err shed in Belfast but now? It's a shocker.
The SD 360 isn't particularly attractive but it flies ok and plenty of room up the front. :ok:

The shed mighta looked better if the took it out of the box it came in. :}

Those Dinfia thingos, whats the name of that show on one of the Foxtel channels where they put two teams of guys in a junk yard and they have to make something out of it.?

As for the "Accountant" only the Poms would actually spend money to produce it. :pm Designed as a DC3 replacement The very pretty F27 did that and eventually the HP Herald which was prettyish in .

The Bristol "frightener" would be up there, but I am surprised this one hasn't got on the list.Triumph of brute strength over drag (http://www.aviationposters.com/images/cs34reduced.jpg)
Mind you the Poms and the Hun were out of the "form and function" school of architecture.:D

Have a hunt around in here there is some really ugly and really beautiful stuff.

The Von Tilberg Collection is also worth looking at.

Cool old a/c stuff (http://1000aircraftphotos.com/index.html)

I don't want to offend any of the 'old' Butler Air Transport guys but the Airspeed Ambassador AS.57 takes the cake. Fortunately they(AS.57) went out of service back in 1959 :} .

Currently, I would say the B1900C can be a bit hard on the eyes sometimes;) .

Best looking, the Dash 8-400Q:)

Oh I would say something German of WW11 vintage. Bristol freighter for sure. Lake Bucaneer....my God. BAe 146...Oh sorry this isn't a "General catagory". :}

And at one stage Transavia considered building a passenger version of the AirTruck! :yuk:

1279shp. I'm intrigued by the name. Is it inspired by a PT6A-67 series engine (I don't know of a -67 rated at 1,279 eshp), a Garrett or some other brand of noise maker?

steamchicken
15th Jan 2004, 23:32
All I'll say about the two argie types is that I hope we splashed at least one of each!

TheNightOwl
16th Jan 2004, 05:22
I realise that it wasn't strictly an "airliner", but the Blackburn Beverley has to be in with a shout for this contest, it wasn't known as the "flying block of flats" for nothing! Its only redeeming feature was the amount of rags needed in the cargo area to mop up the hydraulic fluid and the volume of spare locking-wire. They combined to make the trip from Aden to Nairobi/Luanda and back somewhat more bearable by making balls out of the rags, secured by locking-wire and allowing us to play cricket until bored/deafened. A truly awful (in the real sense of the word) aeroplane.

Kind regards,

TheNightOwl.:E

Tailwheel,

1279shp is bang on the money PT6A-67D is 1279shp.

splat:ok:

bloody good engine too.;)

Oh yeah my vote, one of those pawnee things espeacially that ugly pink one in Tauranga recently.

steamchicken
17th Jan 2004, 01:16
VC10 - no-one could have accused that of negative beauty. And the Comet was stunning? But why didn't you mention the HS748..ugh.

GA Driver
17th Jan 2004, 06:50
What about anything made by Piaggio??? No matter what it is it's still ugly!:eek:

Oh and steam chicken, spot on with the VC10

Splats. PT6A-67D:

Take-off rating
Thermo ESHP 1703
Mechanical SHP 1271
Shaft RPM 1700

Service Intervals
Basic HSI (HR) 2000
Basic TBO (HR) 6000
Fleetleader TBO (HR) 10000

I agree with you, the -34 (and derivatives) is the best "small" engine series; and the -67 models by far the best "large" engine. Nice TBO's too! :ok:

Britten Norman Trilander (Trisislander, TriIslander) - even the name is too fugly to know how to spell it properly!!
BN3 is easier

Wasn't it a Trislander that a child called "two aeroplanes mating"?

You forgot one, the Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer.
VH-AIS used to sit in a hangar at Derby.
The a/c never wanted to land in the heat, it would just float and float and float.

So why hasn't anyone mentioned that amazing Oz design feat - the N22 Nomad? :E :E

I am sure there must have been some blokes in long socks and sandals contributing to that fine design.

Capt Claret
4th Feb 2004, 13:03
Another fine example of Design by Committee , though having flown both, I'd prefer the N22 to the N24 any day. :{

In no particular order: the airtruck, B1900D a.k.a the shed or flying forehead(c model is o.k), trilander, partinavia p-68, a cessna 180/185 with wheel spatts on, cessna cardinal, AN-2 (giant rusky bi-plane).
As for best looking, all Citations, ERJ145 and the gobal express and Aero commanders (late models)all look like pretty sweet wagons.

I always thought that DC-10's/MD-11's were ugly. Am I the only one that does?

GA Driver
7th Feb 2004, 15:44
The DC10?:}:*

They looked hooooooooorn

Yes, it must be just you Duff Gen;)

cjam
8th Feb 2004, 08:52
ZK!.
how can you say a 185/180 is ugly? I have to admit I have never seen one with spats on but does it make much difference?
They are the standard that all GA a/c should strive to resemble IMHO.
I reckon the Dove and Devon are classic and should be removed from the list as well. When I win Lotto I am going to whack pt6-34's on a Devon, blast it back to the aliminium, and kit the back out with a double bed and flat screen tv, beer fridge and ex-Virgin Hostee (the company...not neccessarily...well, ...she used to work for Virgin is what I mean, not that I would hold any other interpretation against her, I'm very open minded.)

The Nomad was crayoned by a bunch of cardigan, sandal and sox wearing nerds in a windowless building!

Yep Mike Seirra Foxtrot was the preffered version, amazing how much room it seemed to have on the Flying Docs!

The 1900 looks like a spy plane with all those things glued to it. The Eagle Motors ones look particularly bad with the black soot from the thirsty PT6. At least you know where some of the gas is going!

I flew the Herald and the L188 Electra, not pretty, but no aeroplane is ugly if it's strapped to your a:mad: e and generating a pay cheque.

Beech 1900 gets my vote, must be something wrong with it considering it has all the airfix extras glued on. Strange looking aircraft.

I think ATR 42 is not a pretty aircraft, very french looking.

In NZ some of the best looken wagons have to be MU-2, Chyane 4 LS, 727 and the fat burger J41 worst dressed goes to the B1900D and the 180/185 (and the rest of that old school junk) live in the now man!
