View Full Version : Worst Airport?

Originated as a conversation in the Pub…

Where, in your experience is the worst International Airport? I had thought about criteria etc. but came to the conclusion that it should be decided on emotion and experience (hatred?) alone. Tales of woe are optional and welcome to justify your choice!

To get the thread started I’m nominating Luanda (LAD), I’d need a toilet roll to list all the reasons, anyone who’s been there will know what I mean…

Let it go to a vote…

My choice, any major airport in the USA in particular LAX.
Prior to Sept 11 they were most unhelpful, tactless and downright obstructive to me when I transited back thru having just flown 12000 miles to my father's funeral. I am also going thru T3 at LHR tomorow en route to YYC, time to count to 10 and take long breaths me thinks.

Warri (Effurun)
Enugu
Bauchi
Port Harcourt (International)
Lagos
Pointe Noire
Malabo
Bata
Uralsk (although it's getting better, but I'd wish the customs would stop hastling us)

Just to name a few.

Manchester first with Toronto T1 & T2 in second place.
I have suffered more abuse and lost more property transitting Manchester than any other airport. Toronto's T1 & T2 are a nightmare whether you are arriving or departing. The thought of facing Canada Customs at YYZ (surely the most obnoxious anywhere) makes you not to want to come home. As for departing, well, we seem to have the stupidest security, yes even more stupid than US security, of any airport in the world. Do you know, according to YYZ airport security, a roll of Scotch Tape is a prohibited weapon?

If anyone can figure out why, I would dearly love to know.

Caslance, I do readilly admit to having a dislike of all things Manchester. But, unlike yourself and chiglet I don't go under any guise of being a "Reasonable and Fair Minded Man" as far as that city and airport are concerned. Both you and your clone have the same dislike of Liverpool, as I do of Manchester, but would have us believe otherwise.

Caslance, I do readilly admit to having a dislike of all things Manchester Oh, so you openly admit it then? Two surprises in one night!

By the way, and for the very last time, I don't dislike the city of Liverpool or it's inhabitants - you may pretend, or prefer it to be, otherwise but that's your problem and not mine.

And that's my final word on the subject, OK? Like it or lump it.....

Mind you, the baggage system in T1 is, frankly, deplorable. And why on earth can't the management find a reliable firm of escalator and travelator engineers?

Still not as bad as Lagos, though.

Either of the New York international airports gets my vote. Disorganised, poor layout, ATC trying to be cool until the slightest thing goes wrong and then it's panic, chaotic airspace, making you do VOR approaches with a 45 degree turn on short finals when there are perfectly serviceable ILSs -and Letting the ports authority run them!

After the AA airbus crash, ATC warned you of wake turbulence on every departure. In a B747 after a Jetstream - I ask you!

BHX - Birmingham UK
On the surface it looks bright, modern and efficient. Underneath, there are more jobsworths per square foot than any other UK airport. Rules and regulations for UK airports - don't bother appling them here, BHX do their own thing, especially at security. BHX have a rule for everything, and someone to enforce it too! Underneath there's a smug assumption that they are somehow friendlier and more down to earth than other areas of the UK - Yeuch! Avoid it!

Barbados easily wins hands down!

And I can assure you, you can heap all the crap you like at LHR T3.............the thing is it's so bad that nobody there actually cares.

In order...

LHR T3
LHR T1
LHR T2
CDG T1 (soooooo French...)
IAD
MEX
EMA
AEP (being bussed along a taxiway between two moving aircraft was not enjoyable)
MVD (checking in by torchlight because of an unpaid electricity bill)
LAX (for needless security hassles)

 well it's coming out that European country - expecially U.K. - got the worst airport!! I couldn't imagine!
But of course I'm writing as a cabin crew, so my point of view is quite different from Pilots, that's why I mentioned places where the assistance is terrible, maybe vor, tower, ILS and runway itself are better.....
It is that you are meaning in this thread?

LHR T3 - Such a miserable and dirty place !! - If the BAA spent the millions they make from shops, on refurbishment, it might actually be a nice place. Given the choice of transitting where would you prefer ? FRA/CDG/ AMS - all far superior.

JFK - Sheer chaos - have you used the terminal transfer bus ?
