comment made by LKY (STRAIGHTS TIMES INTERNET PAGES)
the govt is prepared to accept losses from SIA and associated share value,
BUT will not sacrifice Singapores position as a regional/national Hub.
so it has been said from the top.
SIA WILL BE SACRIFICED .
what i think this will prove to any institutional investors is that singapore is not a free market economy and is not safe to invest in because the govt are prepared to interfere and sacrifice shareholder value to enforce a political point.
the sad thing about this is its entirely unnecessary. by just paying the market rate(like other employers in this industry who are making profits) this could be avoided.
how can investment be made in singapore when such basic business sense is ignored and a flagship company such as SIA will be sacrificed to make an example of a professional group of employees who only want the same terms as other professionals in parallel companies.
LKY and the govt are being very foolish.
they are prepared to destroy SIA which is more than stupid but will do far more damage than that .
they are damaging and undermining business and investor confidence in Singapore.
this is the kind of leadership you have in LKY.
frankly it sucks.
dont let the govt destroy this hugely succesful company for their own selfish political gains.
they are up against the wall on this more than they will ever let on to and i think reasonable results could be achieved for the pilots by alpa-s if you can take the strain.:ouch:

You seem concerned, mk1eyeball. Why should you be?
If SIA should sink, a large airline to the north will sieze the opportunity to grab as much market share as possible.

That press release will surely do absolute "wonders" for SIA's share prices, too.

Do you think the old man is trying to talk down SIA, to avoid reaching the profit level that would require the company re-instate and reimburse the pilots' salaries?
Or is it to "save face" as the obvious pilot shortages start impacting on schedules?
Who knows, they might start employing females. ;)

not concerned as it doesnt directly affect me, or indirectly for that matter.
just intrigued and interested and amazed at the whole scenario.
its quite stupefying.
afterall this country has achieved economically an incredible standard of living ,industry ,research etc etc for its citizens.
i find it incredible that the govt will go to the extreme of 'announcing to the world' that it is prepared to degenerate its flagship company SIA ,over an issue which has little impact in real terms on SIA's profitability.
exactly where is the business sense in this?
brinksmanship it may be but the message to investors remains the same, govt will meddle whatever the cost to SIA shareprice.
what they are saying is that they will not back down from this situation.
pilots will walk away which will result in operating shortages or reduced expansion.
this will affect SIA share price(downwards).
but hey , thats ok because we refuse to pay the market rate.
hmmmm!
its just inane and simply bad economics.
quite mystefying !!!

The Snl Minister said, that he was told that the SIA pilots have huge egos.

Now, isn't it very obvious who has a HUGE EGO?

What about EQ, which I would call WISDOM (as different from high IQ), which the Singapore Govt has been encouraging it's people to cultivate? What is being inferred is that the govt is willing to allow SIA to fall apart and put at risk the thousands of people who will become unemployed. They will obviously blame one particular group of employees for this fiasco.

If eveyone listened to the "guy" , think the birds wil fly backwards.

Why? because he sez so.

So just let the whole drama un fold and end.

Everyone knows who looses in the end, so why spoil the fun and
tell the ending.

SIA's end is inevitable. It has been fortold that it's EGO will destroy the ICON.

PIlots are too poor to have egos that big......

" For every beginning, there is an end"

Looks like another trilogy here....

will it be SMITH vs NEO or SAURON vs HUMANS

There is one emotion and one emotion only we in the west will never understand and that is LOOSING FACE. It is stronger that any other emotion and over rules clear thinking . Where we somtimes swallow hard, take a hit but let common sense prevail , the Asian way of life is at the end dominated by the mother of all drives and that is not to LOOSE FACE. So if this means that they have to sacrifice SIA, their job, their way of life, their mother, Son, you just name it, they will do it. The Harakiri spirit is still soaring high!!
