DOHA: The maiden flight of Air Arabia, one of the newest GCC-based airlines, arrived at the Doha International Airport from Sharjah around 8pm yesterday, with a delegation of the carrier’s senior officials.

Air Arabia will offer five flights every week between Doha and Sharjah, its hub in the UAE.

The Air Arabia delegation, led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammad Al Thani, its chairman, and Adel Ali, the chief executive officer, were welcomed at the airport by Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, and Abdulaziz Al Nuaimi, chairman of Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), as well as other officials from Qatar Airways and the CAA. Tareq Taha, general manager at Regency Travel and Tourist, which is Air Arabia’s main booking agent in Qatar, was also present at the welcome ceremony held at the Ministerial Lounge at the Doha International Airport.

Akbar presented a souvenir to Air Arabia officials. A cake was cut to mark the maiden flight.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Abdullah said: “We are pleased to commence operations to Qatar and look forward to expanding our services in the region. Air Arabia is committed to help customers who are not able to afford air travel to start travelling throughout the region and those who do travel, to do so more frequently.” Adel, a veteran of the GCC’s civil aviation industry, thanked Qatari authorities for facilitating the airline’s Doha operations.

Air Arabia is owned by the Sharjah government.
