Hi
It has been suggested to me that one reason airfares to the Cayman Islands from the US are so expensive is that flights overfly Cuba and have to pay a fee to the Cuban Government for this. Is there any element of truth to this?

I would say no...

All countries levy a 'Navigation Service Charge', it varies and some are noticeably more expensive than others...the end result on your ticket is miniscule however when all other costs, fixed and variable, are taken into account.

The nav charge is as a real world average ballpark figure about $1 per km for a 737-400 sized aircraft and around 2% of the total operating cost as a guide.

Your high ticket price is far more likely to revolve around airlines yield management and the advantage that people who travel US to Cayman have a bit more money to spend so let's take it from them where we can :ok:
