Plane engine bursts into flames
05jan04
TWO people escaped unharmed when a light plane's engine caught fire after landing in Melbourne.
A flying instructor and his student had just landed at Moorabbin Airport when the drama began about 7pm (AEDT) yesterday.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander David Youssef said the instructor turned off the engine after it burst into flames and the pair jumped out of the Piper Warrior single engine aircraft.
Fire crews were on the scene within minutes and were investigating the cause of the fire, he said.
"They were pretty lucky that the fire didn't break out 30 seconds earlier," Mr Youssef said.
"It was quite a significant fire."
The blaze caused thousands of dollars of damage to the plane's engine, he said.
