Gentlemen:

I am one of several people who were selected for direct entry freighter F/O positions at the end of last summer. We have a few questions about the training regimen itself.

During the second interview in Hong Kong we found out all about pay, bases, corporate structure, career path, etc. But we didn't spend much time talking about the initial training experience, other than when it might begin.

Would someone be kind enough to outline the process for us? How long is the training process from start to finish? How large are the class sizes? How many sim sessions alloted for a new hire? We will all be converting FAA certificates as well.

Thanks in advance for the info!

They start two trainees at a time. The both of you will go through the exams and ground school training together and will be paired together for sim training.

The first two weeks will be spent on admin tasks as well as writing the CAD exams.

The next three weeks will be computer-based systems training together with 5 fixed-based sim sessions with a tech instructor.

Then one week of briefings and emergency procedures training.

Then about four weeks actual sim training, checkrides and circuits in the aircraft. There are 10 sim training sessions plus 2 sessions to complete the Aircraft Rating and Instrument checkrides plus 1 session sim circuits. Then circuits in the actual aircraft followed by another LOFT sim session. You also get to go on an observation flight to see how things are done on a regular line flight.

After that, you will be assigned 30 sectors of line training plus a 4-sector progress/line check.

And somewhere in all that, you will get a short break (about one week) where you can arrange to go home for a few days.

In all, you can expect the training to span three and a half months minimum. Might be a little longer if there are problems with availabilty of training sectors, scheduling anomalies, etc.
