I am one of those with the classic scenario. Within the next couple of months my flight training will be completed and I will have a frozen ATPL CPL ME IR MCC and 250Hrs total and a huge bank loan (approx £40000) that, according to my bank manager, needs my undiveded attention... I can imagine that this scenario is similar to a lot of recently educated pilots with little or no experience - so what have you done to keep your licenses current and keep your bank manager happy?
any info is highly appreciated.

Depending on your prospects I would do one of two things.

Either spend even more money on an FI rating and try to get yourself closer to a Commercial Flying job through increased hours instructing......but you may never be able pay the interest on your bank loan....

Or, get a 'proper' job with career propects. Then if you manage to do well you can pay to maintain your ratings and pay back some of the loan......
When things pick up you may be able to get a flying job having paid your way and kept the bank manager calm.

It's not an easy life.........but you chose it.:ugh:

I finished back in october 2001 and have applied for jobs ever since, but no luck in getting hold on anything with wings not even flying for free paradrops, glider towing etc. I have 630 h TT of those 190 are on light twins but all hours i have had to pay for. Unfortunately i'm stuck in a DHL van until the market picks up again:{. I would find myself lucky if i'm invited for an interview in 2005:p

My advice try to get as many 'free' hours in as possible, keep on flying, remember 12h a year just isn't good enough to stay proficient.

Do you not think that you should have thought about this before you commenced your training?

It gets me that people spend this amount of other peoples money and find themselves unemployable.

Next time you see the Bank Manager you might want to lay some of the blame for this folly at this door. The good news for you is that the problem is more his than yours

An FI rating would have been a better spend than the IR.

Another attempted "Fast-track" into the RHS of a 737 foiled by the current climate. I mean its only been like this since 1999

Yes I do want fries with that........

Ouch ... truth hurts.

Hindsight is a marvelous privalidge ... I agree mostly with feet and knees. Except I recon you can do both a proper job and an instructing one. Working 7 days a week isnt much cop but it looks to me like you need hours AND cash (just like me).
I instruct on weekends and do mundane 9-5 stuff during the week. My debt is managable, I have 1000 hours, IR and MCC and ready to rock when the tide turns.
I Recon the only way out of your dilema is with hard graft... Good luck and keep at it!

POL.777 with the market picking up here is my penneth worth.
If you have...
Good education, GCSEs, A-levels and a degree with good grades (C and above). A decent flight training record - first time passes in ground school and not too many attempts at the flight tests, from a decent FTO.
You are a good bloke genereally and come across well then apply to the CTC ATP scheme. Hard to get on but probably your best chance of getting a Jet RHS with 250 hours.

PS instructing is great too if you can justify what would be 6 grand by the time you finish.

In exactly the same position, did CPL/FI in 99 and IR in September 01  1khrs MCC IR

Dont know about you but it feels good to fly a few times a week and to have served an apprenticeship. Hopefully to be in the front of the queue when the airlines start to recruit for the current vacancies that exist.
