Just had a conducted tour of "Terminal New" at Toronto's Lester B. Pearson Airport. "WOW" is the only way to describe the facility. It is reminiscent of Hong Kong and Kansai. Airlines and pax will love it but they will hate paying the, inevitable, high fees to pay for it. Capable of handling 60 million and expandable to 80 million pax, it is a state of the art airport and truly a twenty-first century facility. It is to have as much retail space as the Trafford Centre in manchester and some of the worlds top retail names will be represented.

T1 and T2 will soon be consigned to memory ending what is presently the worst airport in this hemisphere. They will not be missed. Officail opening is slated for March of this year.

Total floor space of "Terminal New" = 82 acres or 331,854 sq m. (Source: GTAA website)
Total retail floor space of Trafford Centre = 130,021 sq m. (Source: Peel Holdings website)

That would mean that over a third of the available area of the new terminal is given over to retail activity. Is this really the case?

Believe it. But my question is; Just what retail stores will be able to afford the rent? When you learn that Pearson will become the third most expensive airport in the world, the questions that need to be asked, and answered, are 1). How much will goods have to be marked up just to cover the cost of doing business at the airport? 2). Notwithstanding #1, who would be foolish, or rich, enough to buy, all but the neccessities?
