Probably because Lufthansa operates proper schedules from other than Frankfurt ie Munich Dusseldorf whereas BA cannot see past its nose and farms all its non London to Citiexpress which I presume doesn`t show in the figures and in France you have no other choice!

In the UK you also Have Virgin and BMI flying large numbers of pax around and of course 1 or 2 low cost operators

And of course, outsde "London", BAW/BACX [whatever] use Barbie jets on a lot of routes, whereas the "Competition" LH/AF/KL etc use "proper" a/c, you know, A319/320/321s, or B733/4/5/6/7/8 etc or Md80 series

Barbie jet = Regional jet. Also known as replacement jet, revenue jet, furlough jet, etc
The term has less relevence (or slander) as RJs can now be larger than some mainline aircraft. CRJ 900 v early DC9 series.

Always tricky mentioning world biggest airlines. You can measure these things in a lot of different ways, and in the States the carriers swap places depending on how you express them. Same in Europe I would think. You can look at the number of passengers carried, you can look at revenue, you can look at passenger ton kilometers (or miles, if that is your reference), in other words how far do passengers travel with you. Taking one million people from Boston to NY is not as interesting as taking them from NY to Tokyo. You can look at the total transportation picture. In other words include the amount of cargo carried by the carriers. For some of the non-US carriers this can make up to 25% of their total revenues. You can look at profit/loss per carrier, you can look at market share. You can look at the domestic and international travel breakdown. All have their merits, none are definitive.
