hi everyone,

i'm still 15, and i'm a girl, but i wanna be a pilot in the future... if i want to have a better chance to get into the cadet programme, what should i do now, what subject should I take for my high school programme... and should I study univerisity??

Is lufthansa a good company? is it very hard for a girl to be a pilot?

Dear gal:

I really wish I can be back to the same age as you so I can get all my aviation knowledge to become a commercial pilot. What I will do is:

1:) Go to get your PPL(Private Pilot Liscene) As soon as possible, or may be move up to get your CPL, Do this in the weekend

2) Keep up your hardwork in school, go to univeristy and take a major such as Physics, Math, Electronic Engineering....science Majoy

3) play Flight Simulator, Take all the learner course, inside the game very helpful

4) Read books in library about aviation, know the engine type, flight type...

5) Travel By FLight

I am sure once you reached 18, You will be full of aviation knowledge...then apply for your country airline with flying hours!
THis will make you stand out from the crown!

I haven't seen any bias towards a particular sex so far. Instructors and colleagues might not swear as much in front of women but that's about it!

Though a technical background helps with the cadet training many had not had anything to do with maths and physics etc for 10+ years before they went onto the course so I strongly recommend you pick whatever subjects that interest you and do well in them.

Yes, get a degree. No one can take that away from you no matter what happens.

CX111 is right about finding out as much as you can from books, the internet and talking to people in the industry.

Lufthansa? It's a good company, I suppose. But if you're asking about their cadet program, I hope you're a German national born in Germany. Otherwise, you won't get into that one.

There is no reason why it should be harder for a woman to be a pilot than it is for a guy.

I'll presume you're a HK citizen:-

You'll find alot of useful advice on this Fragant Wannabees forum in trying to become a pilot. Needless to say it can be a tough career to break into, and sponsored cadet pilot schemes are toughly competed for. Even still all wannabees are always willing to share info and advice, so just ask the guys on here, if you cant find the answer already.

In answer to your question and re-iterating alot of what CX111 has already said, I would suggest:-

1) Do a few hours of flt. training if you can (In Australia maybe) - although Cathay & Dragon specify you dont require flt experience, you'll find alot of applicants have done a few hours if not completed their PPL abroad.
If you can only afford 1 or 2 lessons, at least you can demonstrate that you really want this despite the economic constraints.

2) Both airlines would prefer if you did science/maths based A-levels, but as long as you get v.good grades in these subjects at O-level, this becomes less of an issue.

3) Go to University, experience it for what it is and all that it offers, but importantly do a subject that YOU enjoy and are good at. There are many transferable skills in all subjects, and you dont have to do a science based degree to be better at being a pilot. And yes it is a good to have it to fall back on.

4) Play Flt Simulator for a bit - it does contains alot of information. Learn it, and you can use this an example to demonstrate that you really are interested in aviation (but personally, after a few hours I get really bored with it, and end up playing combat flight sims instead!)

5) Read as much as you can on aviation especially commercial aircraft and learn about the company you intend to apply to.

6) If you can, travel (not necessarily by flight). This demonstrates your passion for travelling.

7) If you do get casual jobs/summer work whilst growing up, try and get jobs that require responsibility, customer contact, management and transferable skills that apply to a piloting job.

8) Oh make sure you're English is impeccable (unlike mine).

9) Get a driver's license and learn to swim well.

10) Do things that make your application stand out among the multitude of other applicants who would have done the above and maybe more - such things like voluntary work, unpaid work experiance at an aviation company, being a member of the scouts/guides, held a postion on a student body/organisation etc.

Hmm I've gone on a bit - oh well hope that helps.

No no, one must always take the view, when ab-initio, that things may never work out. So you always should leave yourself a backdoor while you're doing your flight training on the side.

So getting a degree anywhere but aviation is a big bonus. Aviation degrees, by and large, are some of the most useless things there are on offer, unless if you're planning either to be an engineer or mechanic.

Thanks for giving me such valuable advices!!!! I was so happy that when I saw all the replies. I am thinking about getting a summer job in an airlines company in Hong Kong during the coming summer. Do you think I can? I am pretty sure that I'll take Physics, Chemistry and H.Maths for my IB course. I hope it will be useful.. I love travelling a lot, hehe. oh I think I should read more about aircrafts then!

I am sure that you can apply for it, I was gonna apply for a holiday job in CX in this winter, but unfortunately CX anounced that it would NOT take any holiday trainee for 2003, so I couldn't apply for it. CX offers undergraduate students some holiday posts, and I am sure that students DO get paid while working in there, around hk$6000 a month or something..
