Jeppesen seem to be mailing out update CDs for FliteStar VFR at the moment, at least to those of us who have a nav data subscription. It includes not only an update to the nav data but also upgrades the software to version 9.028. At first glance there are some nice enhancements, plus it covers the whole world at a mapping level, though only the region you subscribe to at the aviation data level.

The bad news is that it crashes whenever you try to access the 'Reports' section to print off a PLOG. This is a bit of a drawback.

The good news is that they seem to have noticed this, and there's a fix which you can download from here (http://www.jeppesen.com/wlcs/index.jsp?section=support&content=technical_flitestar.jsp) to bring it up to 9.029.

After that little false start it all seems to work fine. The uploading of routes to my Garmin 196 works properly now in that it will at last map FliteStar waypoints onto the data within the GPS. Prior to this it used to ignore the GPS data and create new waypoints for the whole route, ignoring the identically-named ones built into the GPS and all their associated airfield and frequency data etc.

A worthwhile upgrade, but only if you download the patch after installing from the CD.

If they shipped this product without first making sure everything in the pulldown menus actually works, I wonder what "less important" errors are in there... e.g. missing bits of CAS? :O
