View Full Version : Average CFI,II,MEI Price?

Hi guys,

I am interested in doing in getting a CFI,II and MEI in the US.
Would you know the average cost of such courses?and time to get them?
I believe,if its the same as 2 years ago,the written exam is quite easy..could study it at home before flying there..however the oral is rather painful:E but not imposssible.
I have friends who still have their notes from when they were instructors..
I hold a FAA ATPL.
Do you know of any schools that would still keep on their graduates?

The thing to remember is there is no minimum training requirements. The more prepared you are when you arrive the less you pay for. That means study, take the written tests, purchase the Aviation Instructor's Handbook & Study as many books as you can get your hands on.

The King Videos are over simplified but a good guide to what to expect.

One of my friends did the 15 day thing at ATP in Las Vegas, for MEI first, then CFIA and CFII add ons later. He said you have to have the writtens done as a minimum before showing up.

American Flyers have a 30 day program for CFIA and CFII.

There are also hundreds of small schools that do guaranteed price CFI courses, EX I had a friend go to San Diego for a week and get his CFI done. You gotta surf the web to find current prices though.


Also Research the Checkride Policies in the FSDO regions you look at. Some Regions you go to the FAA for your rides, others you pay an examiner (FAA is free but sometimes harder, sometimes a longer wait fora ride too - depends on the region). So make sure you ask the school you are talking to how it works in their region.

Thank you for your post.
I will definitively look into a few schools in the US.I give myself,rather the industry,to give me a job in Europe until March then i will seriously look into doint the instructor course.
Unfortunately my FAA ATPL is not current anymore but I have a JAA ATPL which is..
Would i have to take a IR recurrency before the CFII course or would the sign off be enough and validates it?
You said a friend of yours did a MEI before the CFI..I thought the basic was the CFI then the MEI was an add on?unless he does the CFI directly in a twin..more expensive though..

The peoples choice-www.shebleaviation.com or if I have that wrong just google- shebles.Kingman arizona and henderson(vegas)nevada.Cost for cfi/ii/mei 12 days 6795$.They get great reviews.1 800 249 6482.Can be done sometimes a bit cheaper but a checkride with sheble senior is worth the money.

Not true. You can do ANY instructor rating as an initial. Glider, helicopter, MEI, etc... doesn't matter. After that any additional instructor ratings are just that... additional. You just have to hold commercial privileges in the category and class of a/c you choose to do the CFI in. Also you have to hold instrument privileges in that category and class if you want it to be an instrument instructor checkride.

Most of the students I worked with as an instructor did their CFII first and then added on the CFI.
