Wasn't there a German New Guinea colony right up to the Great War (WW-I)? That might have had some influence in the selection of the Junkers a little over a decade later.

Bit of info on the Ju-31; 4 were operated between 1931-42 in PNG between Lae, Wau, and Bulolo, to lift in all sorts of freight, cars, trucks , cows. horses, and all the gold dredging equipment for the goldfields. The roof of the cabin was detachable for the larger items, and it could lift 3.5 tons at a time over a short distance(<50nm). The 3 a/c were named Peter, Paul, and Pat, operated by BuloloGold, and the 4th by Guinea Aiways.Nearly 41000 tons airlifted in, in 11 years.:ok:

Flown like you would drive a (tough) truck, until they fell apart. Nice replica of a similar craft at the RAAF Association Musuem, Bull Creek WA?
