Pretoria - Two people have died after a small aircraft crashed on the Welbekend smallholdings near Pretoria early on Tuesday.

Superintendent Eugene Opperman for police said the single-engined, fixed-wing plane crashed about 08:20. It burst into flames.

Witnesses said it sounded as if the plane was experiencing engine trouble before it crashed.

Police are picking through the charred remains of the plane in search of clues to the identity of the pilot and passenger.

It was not possible to determine the make of the burnt-out plane, Opperman said.

NEWS 24.COM

Pretoria - The plane that crashed on a Welbekend smallholding near Pretoria on Tuesday was a home-built aircraft.

The owner, Johan Vosloo, and his instructor, Sandy Kirkpatrick died in the crash. A post-mortem will determine whether they died on impact or was burnt to death when the plane burst into flames.

Vosloo's website says: "It took me exactly 8 years to finish (started building during October 1995). I found the structures easy to build (wings and fuselage), but the finishing was very time consuming."

The CAA authorised it to fly on September 26, 2003. The owner was still in training.

Gilbert Thwala of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority said Vosloo and Kirkpatrick took off from the Babsfontein Aerodrome near Bronkhorstspruit about 08:00.

Witnesses said it sounded as if the plane was experiencing engine trouble. They said the aircraft failed to gain altitude, went into a spin, crashed and burst into flames about 08:20.

Thwala said the charred remains of the men were taken away from the crash site about 12:30. Police and the CAA's accident investigators were still on the scene.

He said it was the second crash in the area in two months. Nobody died in the previous accident.

Vosloo was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association of South Africa, who worked to create a sound legal base for the operation of home-built aircraft.

Very sad news, condolences to family and friends
