View Full Version : Flying Video - Sound Track

I am putting together one of those rather daggy and self congratulating but somewhat engrossing, Squadron Flying videos. Any ideas for sound tracks for both the Flying Scenes as well as the "boys antics" on the ground?

Engine noise and engine noise only. Too much music used in aviation videos nowadays. I get really peed off when BBMF or sparrows are on TV / Video and they play some  muzak over the top.

You want it when?
8th Dec 2003, 07:31
Born to be Wild... IMHO & FWIW of course

DRAGWA
8th Dec 2003, 09:32
How about, "It's raining men?"

But seriously, for the Draggie it would have to be "Come on feel the noise" by Twisted Sister.

Or how about something slower like Pink Floyds "Learning to fly".

Good luck and by the way... I want a copy.

Squadron vid or End of training Vid ?

Learning to Fly - Tom Petty / Foo Fighters

In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins

Here I go again - Whitesnake

Mandy (Clubmix) - Westlife ;)

In the Air Tonight has been used for a video already but is a good choice. Said vid was a quite good to say the least - 12/208 Sqn GW1 - Incidently does anyone know where I can get a copy?

Thunderstruck - ACDC

seem to remember 13 or 2s GW 1 vid had In the Air Tonight and Here I go Again on it as well. Fantastic vid!

Yeah - one of the Gulf vids had 'Here I Go Again' on it; don't recall which Sqn but I think they called it 'Boys of Bahrain'. Made great viewing, extremly emotive.

Was that very vid that sparked my suggestion.

Yes, that would be the TVAM 'Boys from Bahrain' video. Cracking vid. Motivational stuff - would have made a good recruiting video. It had Phil Collins - In the air tonight and Whitesnake - Here I go again, plus a bit of "nothing on the RWR, they're all asleep boys, they're all in their little beds". I did have a copy, but someone pinched the tape: it was as worn out as an 8th generation grumbleflick, though. Through the gift of broadband maybe someone could post a copy for download - they've done similar in the private flying forum, but puddlejumpers just aren't so exciting.

Back to the thread, you can't go wrong with some 'soft rock anthems'. Nuff said.

having been lucky (or unlucky enough, depending how you look at it) to be based out of Bahrain dropping JP233 on the early GW1 missions, we were mostly 15Sqn, plus 617, 27 and some 14 crews and one 20 Sqn pilot - GR1s - (not 13 or 2 Sqns who were based at Dhahran) and we were all given free copies of said video - the one with Whitesnake "here i go again" and Phil Collins "In the air tonight". I assume the Jag and Bucc guys recieved the same.

It was very professionally made by TV AM and although i still have a copy it was worn paper thin through over-use in the months after we returned. Great momento of the event as it features some that never made it to the end and some that are not here today.

As for the music - anything by Kylie will do, probably "Spinning around"!!!

Runaway Gun

"DREAMS" by Van Halen - the Blue Angels A4 video was fantastic.

"KICK" by INXS

"REBEL YELL" by Billy Idol

"YOU COULD BE MINE" by Guns and Roses

"FLY AWAY" by Lenny Kravitz

"ENTER SANDMAN" by Metallica

"ANIMAL" by Pearl Jam

"CRAZY" by Seal

"BULLET THE BLUE SKY" U2

"GIVE IT AWAY" The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Sorry but I couldn't find anything suitable by Jewel, Crowded House, Moby, Coldplay or Henry Rollins.... :p

Pretty well anything by Queen has to be top choice (although I know it's been done before with those phantastic Phantom vids).

I've used Also Sprach Zarasthrustra (sp?), O Fortuna, 'Bohemian Like You' by the Dandy Warhols, 'Year 3000' by Busted, Liberty Bell (Theme from Monty Python) to name but a few...probably blown my user name now but hey....
I've found the key is to pitch the music to what fits the squadron best, rather than some 'top gun' b@ll@x.....

Best of luck!

P.S. Worst vid I ever saw was a GR4 squadron post US weapons det - endless ML air to air shots with no action, no action near the ground (you've got have the speed rush!).dull, dull, dull!

Thanks guys...some great ideas...I have wide and varied airborne shots as well as some video of Squadron members socialising (in our own special way....). I'll be trying to match scenes with the sound track but will overlay it with the actual audio source in some cases to add to the affect. Have a number of "last flight bishings" but probably should go on a separate video...

Just to support what's been said earlier - can we get some of these squadron vids online for all to enjoy? If the Private Flying guys can manage it I'm sure we could at least have a go! Would be great to see some gung-ho action and reminisce (sp?) over old times!

LILO

I use Adobe Premiere as my editing tool - you can overlay music, bring up or chop original soundtracks, use the awesome special effects etc etc. Very comprehensive and quite expensive - but the results speak for themselves! (Full motion DVD quality output with stereo soundtrack)

Putting the vids online would be a good option but for the rules regarding copyright and 'public performance'......

And to be honest you'd need broadband to make it worthwhile. However, if you want a Canberra vid drop me a PM.

Cheers

Ages ago I took G-HUEY to an airshow where a BBC team wandered around putting together a 2 minute clip for the local evening news. They spliced it together to the sound of Genesis' "the Brazilian" - can recommend the finished result.

Welcome to the 21st Century! Who is making these time expired suggestions like Whitesnake, Phil Collins and Queen! L.I.L.O. - look for a current song that will become a future classic, possibly due to the fact it will be on your video. There are plenty of awesome flying vids out there, check out some of Sackdragger's Harrier compilations for ideas. Take your time to pick the right track but 80's glam rock - I dare you!:yuk:

I've got a couple of vids, all 30-40MB. Can anyone give me some idiot-proof instructions as to how to make them available online (PM me)?

Would love to get a digital copy of that 'Here I go again' GW1 if anyone's got one.

The music I used for my latest GW2 vid is 'Boom' by POD - seems to work quite well, as long as you've got lots of things blowing up of course.

How about some early Doors tracks -- "Spanish Caravan" or several from Strange Days come to mind. Or how about It's A Beautiful Day's "Wasted Union Blues"? Or even "White Bird" although maybe that's a trifle corny.

Queen still does it for me though . . .

LI-LO,

You don't say what you fly. But if you are single-seat I would imagine your squadron antics (in 'your own special way') might benefit from say Pet Shop Boys, or Liza Minnelli or Will Young.....

Hur Hur.

Good luck anyway and make your you use the clip with the boss naked during the middle 8.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here with the full intro.
Dawn - airfield awakening and coming to life - lightening sky - building to crescendo as burners go in etc.

Done once already by the beeb on the Ark Royal last commission programme, but worth another go IMHO. Crescendo timed to F-4 launch off the captapult......orgasmic!

I tried U2’s elevation on a part clip and it worked quite well. I also used Thunderstruck and it fits perfectly!!! I like Dawn and the like, as I have your usual dawn scene with the aircraft having its BF, walk around, then taxi, takeoff etc..Was thinking of adding some WW2 footage I have as the Squadron has fairly historical links but I think it will drag it out too much....I am using Premier so its pretty easy to add in tracks. I am slowly trying all the suggested and will keep all updated..thanks again...hopefull will get it down sometime in the new year

There were actually 2 videos made, one by TV AM in Bahrain containing 2 music montages and several "outtakes" and one by SKY in Dhahran

As has been said, Bahrain is Phil Collins In the Air Tonight & Whitesnake Here I Go Again on My Own

Dhahran has George Michael Freedom. The other tune is by Huey Lewis & the News , but being old, the name of the tune escapes me. They also did a combined land'/air video to Bette Middler Wind Beneath My Wings

My copies are in storage.

Combined they run to ~ 27 mins

Nostalgic Stuff -

The tunes as thay taxy out on In the Air Tonight still makes my spine tingle

Paul with "They're all asleep in their little beds" ****!!!

And the superb editing to get a Hellfire imapact on the relevant beat of ...Freedom (bang), Freedom (bang) .... was excellent

Any music videos out of more recent conflicts??

Don't wish to be accused of dragging things out if the archives but just wondering if you completed the vid LILO? If so any chance of popping it on the net so we lucky broadband users can admire it?
Also - being a relatively young chappie I've never been lucky enough to view many of the old videos that people are forever harking on about - someone must have them in digital format so any chance of wacking them up for all to enjoy? I'm sure many would be grateful!

Big download (40meg), but works pretty well I reckon. The clip is at the bottom of the page opened up by the link.

OK, it's typically cheesy American stuff, but something like that would have applicants beating the doors down on the recruitment office far more effectively than some arty-farty, limp-wristed 'splinter in the finger' effort.

Oh, and it's fun to watch. Van Halen rocks.:D

Got to agree with 'Don't Stop Me Now' by Queen. Check out the lyrics:

'I'm a rocket ship..'

'On a collision course..'

'I'm out of control...'

'I'm a sex machine, reday to reload.'

'Like an atom bomb..'

'...about to explode.'

It just begs to for some carefully spliced vid.

I remember being on Air Cadet camp at RAF Leuchars in 91 and being shown the TV AM GW1 video. It was extremely emotive and I don't think I've ever seen a group of spaceys so engrossed in anything before or since. I would love to see that video again.

When we were at school in the CCF the CO of the RAF section showed us the TVAM video. Great stuff (especially for me!)

Wasn't there some sort of restriction placed upon said video due to the fact that it showed some, as mentioned previously, who didn't make it to the end?

Best music track applied to flying footage that I have seen was at the DA in Shrivenham.

Queen: Another One Bites the Dust, accompanying WWII cockpit camera film of Typhoons destroying enemy targets with rockets...

Probably not a good song for an EFT cse video though.

That said, with yesterdays defence cuts, would be a great song to play with any RAF subject matter...:{

I remember viewing the GW1 vid with a load of Wessex mates in Bessbrook Mill, South Armagh and the crewroom (that was usually full of banter/burning toast) was silent. A very good video indeed, and I am surprised that no one has put it onto DVD/digital format yet?

The unofficial Army vid from GW1 had a bit of Elgar's 'Nimrod' which was pretty good and in a funny way a view of the STUFT (with vehicles/aircraft) leaving Bremerhaven with Rod Stewarts 'I am sailing' hit a certain emotion.

Hows about Clubbed to death by Rob D (i.e the matrix theme tune). IMHO a good one for the base sunrise shot then mix it into any rock type suggestion from above.
Oh and Buck Rogers by Feeder, ripped from "Behind enemy lines" I know but I thought it worked well. :p

If you want a sunrise over the base beginning there is only one tune that fits the bill - U2 The Unforgettable Fire. Great beginning and then it kicks off into a great rock tune.

How about STARGAZER by RAINBOW. Its on the album 'The Very Best Of Rainbow' by Polydor. 8 mins and 26 seconds long its gaggin' for a punch vid.

Some of the lyrics include:

Hotwings moving fast across the desert, we feel that our time has come.

No sun in the shadow of the wizard.

When do we leave? I believe yes I believe.

Some of the drumming in it just begs for some of those fast flip-flop edited shots.

Tell you what, I'd buy a copy!

Somebody mentioned him earlier and I'd have to recommend checking out stuff by Rob Dougan (also known as Rob D).

There is an instrumental CD which came with a limited edition of his album and they seem to use it for about 90% of the videos they make for Top Gear, to great effect.

Particularly recommend 'Clubbed to Death', 'Clubbed to Death 2' and instrumental versions of 'Furious Angels' and 'I'm not Driving Anymore'. Would all work well for the atmospheric instrumental stuff.

Works for cars anyway and I'm certain it'd lend itself well to aircraft videos, especially that fast jet, low level footage that we all love. :D

For ANY Battle of Britain Clips ....

'Aces High' - Iron Maiden

"There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
Then comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble we've got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack.

Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheelblocks there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before it's too late.

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. Aces high.

Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin round and come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again.

Bandits at 8 O'clock move in behind us
Ten ME-109's out of the sun
Ascending and turning our spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them I press down my guns

Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live, Aces high."

... 'or Flight of Icarus' - again by Maiden (For Hang Glider Pilots perhaps???)

"As the sun breaks, above the ground,
An old man stands on the hill,
As the ground warms, to the first rays of light
A birdsong shatters the still.

His eyes are ablaze,
See the madman in his gaze.

Fly, on your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun,
On your way, like an eagle,
Fly and touch the sun.

Now the crowd breaks and a young boy appears
Looks the old man in the eye
As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd
In the name of God my father I fly.

His eyes seem so glazed
As he flies on the wings of a dream,
Now he knows his father betrayed
Now his wings turn to ashes to ashes his grave.

Fly, on your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun,

On your way, like an eagle,
Fly as high as the sun."
