New low-cost airline Wizz Air plans to launch flights from Poland next May, when the country joins the European Union.
Wizz Air, set up by the ex-CEO of Hungary's national carrier Malev Jozsef Varadi and registered in Britain, plans to create the first base for low-cost carriers in southern Poland, based in Pyrzowice near the city of Katowice.
"We have signed a long-term agreement [with the Pyrzowice airport authorities], because Poland has the biggest market among the European Union candidates," Varadi told reporters.
Wizz Air will be the second low-fare carrier to fly from Poland after local company Air Polonia, which plans to launch flights from Warsaw to London on December 15.
Successful low-fare ventures like easyJet and Ryanair, although looking at expansion into Eastern Europe, have not yet begun flights to Poland.
