SANTA ANA, Calif. -- The California Supreme Court has upheld a $9 million judgment against the world's largest helicopter manufacturer.

Fort Worth-based Bell Helicopter had appealed a 2001 verdict won by the widow of a firefighting pilot who was killed when his copter's engine failed and the aircraft crashed. The company argued that a federal law barred Sharon Hiser from suing because the helicopter was more than 18 years old.

But the state Court of Appeals ruled in August that the installation of a new fuel system and warning devices extended the company's liability.

Hiser's attorney said the state Supreme Court's decision would help bring his client closure.
