A taste of English spunk for the Aussies, maybe we'll see them a little more modest now

Your wish, Sir P's LC is my command:

'Wallabies choke!'

Yes, it is nice to see the World champion title coming back FROM the Southern hemisphere.

I suppose it wouldn't be British to celebrate the Wallabies being destroyed on their home turf, despite having 16 men on the pitch and despite all the dirty tricks and all the whining beforehand. But it was great to win against quality opposition, and to win in a way which mixed tries with kicked goals.

Well done chaps!

Where were you when England won the world cup?

Me? Nothin' special, at home with a 4 pack of Wadworth 6X on the edge of the sofa.

After the euphoria we can debate

1. THE REFEREE
2. That nasty looking injury to Larkham
but mostly

1. Possession
2. In their half
3. The will to win
4. Big blokes in white shirts moving forward
5. Won and lost 3 times over
6.. The coup de grace from JW
7. 30,000 England supporters in Sydney!

Good total rugby, where the correct emphasise was placed on the need for strong forward play combined with strong running and a water tight defence from the backs. They may be a "Dad's Army" but they took apart the aussie kindergarten up front. Maybe this will cause a change for the better in the Super 12s with forward play not being ignored anymore. Quite what substances the ref was on during the scrums, we'll never know. Looking forward to the inevitable Australian Press backlash, but as Jim Telfer said, "Excuses are the constant companion of those who fail".

My old rugby wounds are all gone in the excitement. The auto-dislocating shoulder, the torn arm muscle, the aching hip all forgotten in the adrenalin rush...

They'll be back tomorrow though

Beating the Aussies in the final felt almost as good as beating the French in the semi's. ;)

Funny, must have been watching a different match. England hardly 'destroyed' the opposition, nor took apart the aussie kindergarten. Enjoy it while it lasts and try to win as gracefully as you lose....(I note excuses about the ref were at the ready.) Well done England!

CS you're right, we didn't exactly destroy the opposition etc etc, but you guys were the ones who started all baiting, "Boring England, Dad's Army" et al and then to round it off Bob Dwyer calling England a bunch of cheats! so why are you surprised when it is thrown back in your faces?

Anyway fantastic performance and well worth getting up at 4am to watch!!

OI!!

Even BEagle Towers (not known for jockstrappery) reverberated to the sound of the match this morning.

The quality of the TV pictures was unbelievable (to someone who remembers seeing both the first cross-Channel and the first Telstar live pictures) - but the rugby was tremendous. A fast game in the first half, then too many mistakes=too many penalties against England.

Amazing actually to be able to hear what the referee was saying to the teams in the scrums - and brilliant camera work and editing. None of which could possibly compare with the quality of the game, of course.

...coming for to carry me home. In an aeroplane. Which makes the thread legitimate, of course;)

(And none of this Wg Cdr nonsense - I worked for a living! Spec aircrew Sqn Ldr - best rank in the RAF!!)

Good win to England, but I thought we (Wallabies) did very well and were scarcely "destroyed", unless I saw a different game.
We had a fine old time watching it here in the Sandpit. The tent was pretty well half Aussie, half Pom, so you can imagine how good the atmosphere was. The Yanks were a bit bewildered, though. They had no idea there was a world sporting event on today. I think, if memory serves, they won the World Series again this year, so good on 'em for that.
Anyway, as I said, good win to England. Now we finally know how you blokes feel all the time.

Hangover abating...man, what a game!! A full half hour of extra time, and a drop goal victory in the final minute! It doesn't get much better than this.

Congratulations to both teams, it was a pretty clean match all the way through, thought the Ref was just the best man for the job.

Who cares about the baiting/sledging/slagging off/trumpet blowing and all the rest which is to come; it's all part of it, and it was a great thing to feel a part of.

Good on ya Pomgolia, well fought and well deserved. Comiserations to the battling Aussies, you are not shamed.

As a die hard Wallaby fan, I awoke this morning with a very sore head and a few dollars out of pocket.

Congratulations England. They were the best team on the day, the best team of the series and have been in smashing form for about 2 years now. They deserved their win. ;)

Could you ask for a closer finish, I think not!!! I have lost my voice. My radio calls on Monday arvo will be dodgy at best. Enjoy the win England.

Also, Andre watson had a good match as ref.

Stunning, what more needs to be said! (OK, so I'm going to write some more - so what!)

Sat in a pub this morning, surrounded by a big group of us all cheering on the boys, most feeling a little fragile after a dinner last night. What a way to spend a Saturday morning!

Apparently, some journalist in Oz said that England can't score tries against good rugby sides. Maybe someone ought to tell him that he's right - might shut him up!!:p Incoming!

To be fair (ish), the Aussies put up a hell of a fight and the two teams produced what has to be one of the greatest games of rugby I've ever seen. Respect to Jonny - what an awesome kick under just unbelievable pressure.

Proud to be English!

Congratulations England, a well deserved win from an outstanding team. The Wallabies went down fighting in a wonderful game of Rugby. BTW Have heard nothing but praise from most Aussies wrt. the English team and their supporters. The spirit of rugby is alive and well. And yes it does hurt to lose!

Mr C Hinecap

He PLAYS for Newcastle. We are allowing southerners up there now.

For those claiming League as a northern thing - ar$e. It is played in the MIDLANDS. Played Union in the NORTH until joining the mob - I never knew any of those League thugs - you had to head south for that sort of thing - Leeds I think were the closest.

Ahhhh - the sweet smell of success. Even BFBS kept working throughout. We did not decimate, but we bl00dy won!

The Northern Rugby Football Union was founded at the George Hotel, Huddersfield in 1895 (and became the Rugby Football League in 1922), which makes the game pretty northern, in my book.

It is a game that developed strong local loyalties, identity and real cosmopolitanism, with tight-knit Northern communities making heroes of Australians and New Zealanders and proved more welcoming to black Britons than the supposedly more sophisticated Rugby Union.

Seeing as you ARE being picky.....NORTHUMBERLAND RUGBY UNION Founded in 1880 Northumberland Rugby Union is one of the 27 Constituent Bodies of the Rugby Football Union which serve as administrators of the game at local level, as such we organise and control many aspects of the game within the 'old' (pre-1974) boundaries of Northumberland.

My old club, Percy Park RFC, was founded in 1872, in North Shields, currently Tyne & Wear, about 125.5 miles away from Huddersfield, says The AA. In a northerly direction. There are only sheep and Sweaty Socks north of there! Oh - and some Fighter Controllers and SARbouys.

THAT is pretty northern, in my book.

Please, BEagle, the older boy started it!

Picky schmicky. I was talking about Rugby League (founded as "The Northern Rugby Football Union") and your contention that it is not "a northern thing". To argue Rugby League is not a northern thing is like arguing Polo is not a southern thing.

Is it 10 losses out of the last 14 games or 11 losses out of the last 15....not sure I must admit. Can't remember who said it (could have been myself) but England were only as good as Wilkinsons boot.

Anyhow, this was such a good thread I thought it worth bringing to the top of the board again.

Good morning to you.

" Remind me again, WHO are current Rugby World Champions, oh, that's right, it's;

Yes, I do seem to remember, the game won by virtue of a drop kick at the death by Mr Wilkinson. Still a win is a win as we are constantly reminded so no good raking up the past.

So, 2007 is a long time away and we still have the 2005 Six Nations on the go. Anyone like to hazzard a guess as to who will win the Wooden Spoon ? Wouldn't want to see England walk away empty handed, or would we !!

Unless you are a kiwi ,who do this every time, it seems pretty pointless to peak too soon. But then....i wonder how the magnificent Ireland would cope with a different team 2 years after a grand slam and 5 of their world class players out injured.Ok 3 losses doesnt look great....fill the lions with celts...let them them get hummiliated in NZ in the summer...come home deflated, lose form just in time to build for the most important year before 2007 in France...:O

I think the England rugy team fancied a new challenge this year. Instead of trying to beat Scotland for 1st place they are now giving it their best shot at beating them for last. They may just do it, depending on how the Italians fare. Still there's always next year.

Lost by 1, 2 and 6 points with a new team that is not firing, I'm not about to top myself. Bit worried about about playing Italy though, they have a good track record in the 6 nations, particularly against Wales and Scotland. Nice to see that Irish doing well, although they could face Australia in the next veterans World Cup final. Both could benefit from Saga discounts to travel for that one.

Not a bad idea that although there would have to be the token Englishman I suppose. There are probably a couple that would make the grade.

Rumour has it that O'Driscoll will be Captain. I wonder who he would have on the Lions squad if he had the choice ?
