AS Chris Corrigan and Sir Richard gear up to float Virgin Blue, Geoff Dixon over at Qantas is not sitting by idly, waiting to get his butt kicked.

Qantas has already conceded 30 per cent of the domestic aviation market to Virgin and is expediting the launch of its new, as yet unnamed, discount airline.

The name "Skimpy" has been mentioned in unofficial circles. We prefer Mangy Young Roo, an appellation which would deliver on the PR push that Qantas, and its offspring, might not survive.

It is probably a fair call to say that Dicko would like to do away with Qantas's domestic altogether.

Labour costs are the critical factor. A Virgin Blue captain takes home $160,000, versus $220,000 for a Qantas captain. Impulse pilots were on just $122,000.

A Virgin hostie gets $36,000, whereas Qantas hosties take $65,000. Dicko could save $75 million a year just on hosties if he could match Virgin. And that's before work practice matters. The Virgin hosties have to clean the plane.

Yeah maybe the hosties are paid too much but in actual fact the Qantas pilots are only half a per cent better off than the Virgin pilots as the QF blokes can work much longer hours resulting in less pilots being required.

So let me see if I have the math right on this one. A QF skipper on $220K is doing pretty close to 1000 hours so thats about $220 an hour. A DJ skipper on $160K doing 800 hours is getting about $200 an hour. Thats just 10%- although I think the actual costs are a little closer than that. So when you take that over the seat costs on an 800, thats about 18 cents per seat per hour difference for BOTH crew! :eek:

And to think we're cutting each others throats to save the travelling public just $0.18. :rolleyes:

With this countries penal taxation rates they "take home" about half that.

MoFo I can suggest a few countries where you may pay less tax but you would then complain about the lack of facilities and services plus have to bribe people for basic necessities.

QFs slightly inflated also, not too many guys doing 1000 hours a year
