Helicopter crashes, but all on board escape

MARSH ISLAND, La. (AP) — A helicopter crashed in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after taking off from an oil platform Sunday, but all three people on board escaped.

People who had stayed on the rig called the Coast Guard to report the crash, saying they could see all three on the helicopter's life raft, Petty Officer Kyle Niemi said.

He said he did not get a report on their condition, because a passing shrimp boat had rescued them from the raft and brought them back to the rig by the time the Coast Guard helicopter arrived.

Niemi said Petroleum Helicopters Inc., which had sent the helicopter that crashed, sent another which carried the pilot and both passengers back.

The rig was nine miles south of Marsh Island, and the helicopter crashed about 1 to 1 1/2 miles toward shore, he said.
