To stem the tide of armed robbery in the country, the House of Representatives yesterday passed a motion, asking the Federal Government to buy 100 helicopters for aerial patrols in the 36 states of the federation.

The cost of the helicopters, according to the sponsor of the motion, Hon. Datti Baba-Ahmed is approximately $100,000 each adding that about N1.4 billion would be needed to purchase the 100 helicopters.

Presenting the motion, Baba-Ahmed said the cost is affordable and not too much to keep Nigerians safe from the marauding men of the underworld.

The House further asked that the Chief of Defence Staff be directed by the President to release military hardware as well as the personnel to help in joint patrols of all roads and borders of the nation, especially as the Christmas period approaches.

It also called for a corresponding training of police personnel, who would be properly equipped to tackle the problem of armed banditry while patrol jeeps would be bought solely for patrol of the highways, "and not to be kept in the houses of the officers."

The motion, which came as a matter of urgent public importance on the need to stem the tide of armed banditry and the setting up and training of an elite anti-robbery squad was seconded by Hon. Aro Isebus Aro.

Presenting his argument for the passage of the motion, Baba-Ahmed said that available statistics showed that at least 100 Nigerians were being killed per hour, while robbers were showing more interest in the lives of their victims than their property, which he said was worrisome.

Bulk deal on R44's???

But knowing Africa how about 100 surplus US Army UH-1H of which 35% will be servicable.......:E

I heard it was 100 kit-built helicopters with turbochargers and a police radio! (NOT) :D Even with bulk purchase discounts, there is no way they are getting the R44 Police Variant for $100K. The margin would be too thin... unless Frank is trying to use this as a marketing tactic to influence the region! (NOT)

Having briefly lived in Africa, international hog driver probably nailed it... surplus aircraft, and they will only get a small percentage flying. They'll keep flying those until they only have two left!

What I don't understand is the fact that labor is absolutely dirt cheap in most of Africa. You could put thousands of policemen in the area for this price tag. What will 100 helicopters do without proper ground units anyway?

RDRickster, you may well be a lot closer than you think. A spray operation using Rotorway Execs has been operating in Nigeria for several years (not sure if they're still in operation right now).

In any case, I'm sure whether the money is used for helicopters or police constables, most if not all will be unaccounted for a day after it's released.

I just received an email from Police General Umbawu who says that the government has overordered 99 helicopters and there is $9.9 million left in the treasury which needs to be taken out of the country.....

Put it in one of the mythical helicopters and bring it to me.:8

After living in Nigeria for the past 11 years, I know for a fact it will never work. If they are lucky, 1 or 2 serviceable helicopters will be purchased, and the rest of the money will end up in a European bank account.
I suppose it will make a change for us expats. It gets a bit boring being pulled up by the traffic police, and being told our documents are out of date, and we will have to pay N50,000 (£250), usually bargained down to N1000. It will be much more fun having a Robbo 44 land in front of our car (unless they crash them first.

If this thread is right, and they really are getting 100 helis, then it means the Princess of Ogoni will now be offering me excess helis as well as $75mil to be collected from her back yard,

most of these Nigerian E mails always get the answer from me, that I am just over their boarder with a crew of Ex SAS men and four helis, waiting for hard facts before we lift of to help them,

Strange, they never reply!:E

Nr Fairy Writes:"Do they want help setting up the bank account ? "

Dave, you cannot believe how much money goes to some of these scams from the states. Im sure with some of the return address' that its big in the UK also...
I have actually had people ask me if they thought it was a good deal.....Postal Authorities here along with the FBI have a team working on these, but its hard to get those responsible out of Nigeria. Quite Frankly based on our lack of any worthwhile Immigration Policy, Im not sure I want them over here. We would never get rid of them......although now that we have some direct flights between the U.S. and Lagos, Im sure its a bit late.

Heres a copy of one that I got a few days ago. and please dont send her any money....ha ha..:

My Dear,
It is with heartfelt hope that I write to seek your co-operation and
assistance in the context stated
below:May I first introduce my self: I am DR.(MRS.) MARIAM
ABACHA,the wife of Late General Sani Abacha (former
Military head of state and President of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria) who died suddenly on 8th June
1998. I got your contact through the help of my sister-inlaw that works

with the Canadian Chambers of Commerce and Tourrism, due,I did not disclose

to her my humble intention for a honest foreigner who will help save my

life and my children. Having noted the confidence reposed on your person
by
the sponsor of the recommendation, I became convinced of your capability

and goodwill to assist me in receiving the sum of US$60 Million secretly

willed in my favor by the late general (my husband).
This money was kept in a Security Company in Amsterdam Holland and I have

all documents with me as of when it was deposited in a Security Vault for

safe keeping. This money has been defaced for Security reasons and also to

avoid it been spent by unauthorized persons. We have been deliberating on

how to invest this fund abroad in a confidential manner until we came to
a
conclusion to use it to buy houses and part of it will be used for
non-speculative investments in your country. However, the current civilian

administration of retired General Olusegun Obasanjo(The President of the

Federal Republic of Nigeria) is
seeking vengeance on the Abacha family because of the life prison jail
sentence confirmed on him by my late husband while in office. In pursuit
of
this vendetta, the present Government have resolved to freeze all known
assets of General Sani Abacha including properties at home and abroad and

are presently embarking on to seize the various bank accounts of my husband

in Switzerland,UK and Australia. In fact, the attack on our family (The

Abacha's) is so devastated to an extent of seizing our traveling
passport, family accounts and even trying some members of our family in
court for offenses allegedly committed by my late husband..My first son
Mohammed Abacha who was arrested and incarcerated for the past 3years was
just release from prison on the agreement to refund $1.5 Billion to the
Federal Government of Nigeria allegedly stolen by my late Husband. We are
not ready to comply to this as most of the family assets and bank accounts
abroad have been Frozen by the Obasanjo regime.
In view of this grievous threat to our Economic and personal survival, our

family trustee have secretly protected the will,The Security Company has

called me to do something about claiming this consignment because of the

demur rage it is incurring and I told them we would come and claim it very
soon but they seriously advised me to move the fund into an overseas
amount, hence the reason why I have chosen you and hope that you will come

to my full assistance and unlimited
co-operation.In the meantime, there is a traveling embargo on us(the whole

family members) and our local accounts are seized. We are currently living

on goodwill of people who believe we cannot be held responsible for the

sins of my late husband. In view of this plight, I expect you to be
trustworthy and kind enough to respond to this distressed call to save me

and my children from a hopeless future. And if you agree to help, we will

compensate you sincerely for your candid effort in this regard with 25%
of
the total amount of $60 Million US Dollars.
In that case, when the money ($60 Million) is moved into your
discrete account, you will be allowed to withdraw 25% in
your favor, while 10% has been set aside for any expenses you might in cure

(There are demur rage to pay before the fund is sign and claimed by
you.)during the process of securing this fund.
The remaining 65% will be invested meaningfully for my children's future.

My cousin (KADIRI MOHAMMED) has perfected arrangements with the Trust
Company concerned and has been assured 100% risk free and safe
operation. What I demand from you now is to arrange to visit the Finance

Company where this money is being deposited and claim it as the bona-fide

owner.
And in due course, all contacts must be made through
DR.KADIRI MOHAMMED through his Telephone: 234-8033-184852 or 234-8033333606
E-mail address: [email protected]
I look forward to your quick response while thanking
you for your co-operation. In view of all above
details, I request you to keep this letter and
co-operation highly confidential.
Best wishes,
DR.(MRS). MARIAM ABACHA.
ABACHAS LODGE,KANO.

The web site here has been posted a few times on other threads on pprune and is a good guide to the state of the Nigerian '419' scam. I saw something about it on one of the threads a few weeks ago and posted it into my list of favorites as, despite the fact that it's serious, it's often an amusing read:

This is a wonderful hype and knowing the US of A attitude to these things where countries need help. There is bound to be either a non repayable loan fron a Do Good Society or George will re deploy his boys from Iraq and set up another military base. Then the Nigerians will have all the helicopters they need!
