To stem the tide of armed robbery in the country, the House of Representatives yesterday passed a motion, asking the Federal Government to buy 100 helicopters for aerial patrols in the 36 states of the federation.
The cost of the helicopters, according to the sponsor of the motion, Hon. Datti Baba-Ahmed is approximately $100,000 each adding that about N1.4 billion would be needed to purchase the 100 helicopters.
Presenting the motion, Baba-Ahmed said the cost is affordable and not too much to keep Nigerians safe from the marauding men of the underworld.
The House further asked that the Chief of Defence Staff be directed by the President to release military hardware as well as the personnel to help in joint patrols of all roads and borders of the nation, especially as the Christmas period approaches.
It also called for a corresponding training of police personnel, who would be properly equipped to tackle the problem of armed banditry while patrol jeeps would be bought solely for patrol of the highways, "and not to be kept in the houses of the officers."
The motion, which came as a matter of urgent public importance on the need to stem the tide of armed banditry and the setting up and training of an elite anti-robbery squad was seconded by Hon. Aro Isebus Aro.
Presenting his argument for the passage of the motion, Baba-Ahmed said that available statistics showed that at least 100 Nigerians were being killed per hour, while robbers were showing more interest in the lives of their victims than their property, which he said was worrisome.
