Maiden Air has no licence to operate
November 12, 2003, 08:35 PM

The national department of transport today cautioned that Maiden Air, which was apparently selling tickets for flights between South Africa and the United Kingdom, had no licence to operate. The department said it had noted reports in the media, from travel agents, as well as the website www.flymaidenair.com, which suggested that Maiden Air was selling tickets to the South African public.

"The national department of transport wishes to caution the public, since Maiden Air has not yet obtained the necessary approval to operate a passenger service between South Africa and the United Kingdom, and as such no passenger protection scheme is in place." The department could not be held liable for any exchanges in money.

The International Air Service Council, an independent regulatory body, which processes airline requests to operate airline services, was currently considering an application from European Aviation Air Charter Services Limited which plans to operate the service in association with Maiden Air, a South African based company. Said the department: "We want to state very clearly that Maiden Air currently has no licence to operate." - Sapa
