I'm currently learning to Fly in Australia and part of the criteria to reach PPL level is to take an GFPT test or General Flying Progress Test ( like a restricted PPL without having done NAVs).
How long does it typically take to pass GFPT?

It typically takes about 1.6 - 1.7 hours flying (plus the ground theory too)!!
Have a look in the Aust Day VFY syllabus as to the content of the test. Typically out to the training area, stalls, steep turns, general handling, a PFL, maybe a PSL, return to base for selected circuits (could include a glide depending on the outcome of the PFL!).
Also the regs (CAO's) spell out the minimum experience required to hold a GFPT - minimum of 20 hours plus other criteria must be met. but Typically depends on the student, the syllabus, and the instructors teaching ability to name a few variables.

Don't forget that you really do not have to do the GFPT. It is only a safety net for if you run out of money. As the theory is you can pause there. But if you are going straight on to your PPL you don't "have" to do it.

The best thing about the GFPT is that you can take your friends up in the Training Area!:D
