Investigators to quiz chopper crash witnesses
Sunday, 9 November 2003

Air safety investigators travelling to the scene of a fatal helicopter crash near Kununurra, in the north of Western Australia, hope to talk to witnesses to the accident.

Police will today recover the bodies of the four men, two aged in their 20s, a 39-year-old and a 61-year-old, who died in the accident.

The four men were returning from a fishing trip yesterday morning when the helicopter crashed in rugged bushland.

The pilot was employed by Kununurra charter company Slingair Heliworks. The three passengers all worked at the Ord River District Co-op.

Another group travelling in a second helicopter witnessed the crash.

John Robins from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau says investigators will spend the next few days examining the crash site and interviewing the witnesses.

But he says it could be months before the cause of the crash is known.

"The on-site phase, again depending on complexity, usually takes a few days ... but altogether to the final report can be six months," he said.
