A pilot and his passenger have escaped injury following a plane crash in South Auckland.

First reports suggest the plane lost power shortly after take-off.

It came down less than a kilometre from the runway at Ardmore aerodrome.

The pilot successfully crash landed between two large stands of trees.

People on the scene say that apart from being a bit pale, the pilot and his passenger are unharmed.

The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating.

..

Good to see nobody was injured.

any additional info appreciated

Lucky pair walks away from plane crash
02 November 2003

By RACHEL GRUNWELL

Two people are lucky to be alive after their plane crashed in a paddock at Ardmore, south Auckland, about 1pm yesterday.

It is the latest in a string of plane crashes in the past month.

Manukau police sergeant Max Mullin said the plane made an
emergency landing after its engine failed shortly after take off from Papakura's Ardmore Airport.

The plane crashed into a fence in a paddock about 1km from the airport. The pilot and female passenger were not injured.

"They were checked by ambulance staff, but are fine," said Mullin.

Part-owner of the plane, Peter Houghton, said the pilot was Simon Ealson, aged in his 20s, who is training to be a commercial pilot and is a member of the Warbirds Association.

"He got a bit of a fright when the engine stopped but he did a pretty good job," said Houghton. The Civil Aviation Authority will investigate.

It was off 03 apparently. I've always thought 21 would be easier to do a EFATO off than 03 - there seems to be power lines everywhere when I look!

Anyway, good job whichever runway it was off - it's nice to have a happier ending this time. :ok:

Very nice job. Yeah, off Rwy 21 you have those nice big rugby fields to go for.

Good work by the pilot. A few years ago at Ohakea when the jet squadrons were still active there was debate over which had the tightest (relative) FLWOP pattern - the A-4 or the CT4. The pitch forward to set the glide attitude in the CT4 gave a noticeable tug against your harness. A two stage flare was also needed prior to touchdown from a PFL. Rule of thumb in reducing your rate of descent from the glide was to remove half the ground from your windscreen then set the flare attitude from there.
I was once told by a senior Macchi instructor that a clean 339 could maintain an ILS profile at idle thrust............
EFATO in a CT4 out of Ardmore? - bags not!

Well done.
