Can anybody tell me whether there are any restrictions on keeping N-registered aircraft permanently in New Zealand and whether there are there any FAA-certified maintenance organisations and examiners for BFRs and the like?
It's common in the UK since it allows people to use an FAA IR rather than the harder-to-obtain local JAR one. In France on the other hand, the DGAC are trying to force owners to move their aircraft onto the local register.

As far as I am aware it is possible to maintain a N-registration in NZ.
A former boss had several aircraft, but 1 would have been a first of type in NZ and didn't want to go through that process with the CAA so kept it on the US registration. Not sure how he maintainedhis BFR though. He travelled alot to the states so probably did one while he was there. His partner at the time was a experienced UK instructor who could conduct UK PPL flight tests in NZ, she may have had a similar approval from the FAA for BFR's etc.
There area couple of FAA approved maintenance people around. Probably to help with aircraft ferrying to the states where it has to be certified airworthy prior to departure for the states.

There is no difficulty keeping a (Part 91/Pvt Ops) N registered acft in NZ - if it is flown using an FAA licence, then the FAA reqmts are reqd to be met, but if flown on an NZ Licence, then all NZ reqmts are to be met - all mtce is governed by FAA. -
